Rising to my feet, I feel a little better about leaving her with Mia tonight but I’m still not looking forward to spending my night with my mother and Norah.

This is the last time.

After tonight, I’m putting my foot down. I’m not going to be herded like a sheep to my mother’s will and whims. I’m not going to accept the fact that she thinks it’s right to judge my life decisions and what I do for myself.

I don’t ask for her support.

I’m independent and hold my own, thanks to the help of my best friend and the fact that my baby daddy isn’t a fucking loser.

I’m more than lucky.

My mother and sister just don’t see that because I didn’t live the way they would’ve wanted me to.

“Damn, what the hell got into her?” Mia comes out of her bedroom, eyes falling onto Mia as she bounces on top of the couch.

“Food truck festival,” I reply. “I amped it up so she didn’t feel bad that she couldn’t come with me tonight.”

“Thank fuck,” my best friend mutters. “You doing what we talked about?”

I bob my head as she comes to stand at my side. “Yeah. I’m done with this molding my future bullshit.”

Mia smirks approvingly. “There you go. Don’t back down. You’re doing the right thing.”

“I know.”

“Then why do you look like you just told Hudson you didn’t want to ride his dick anymore.”

My eyes flick over to her with clenched brows. “What?”

She rolls her light brown eyes and shakes her head at me. “You need to quit that job.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re getting too deep and this isn’t going to end well while you live this second life of yours.”

“I’m not living—” She lifts a brow because I am. Not that Hudson sits down and freely expresses all the things he wants to do with his life, but I’m still not budging on giving up Rory. “Why would he need to know that?”

“I dunno.” She raises her shoulders. “Seems weird that you haven’t said anything.”

“I don’t want anyone in my personal life.”

“But you’ll let him in?—”

“Stop it,” I lightly scold. “He doesn’t tell me anything either. And we’ve both discussed it, we’re not dating. We’re just exclusive to each other until we don’t want to be anymore.”

“You know that’s the stupidest shit I’ve ever heard, right? The moment he starts fucking someone else, you’re gonna get in your feelings.”

Facts.

However, I’d expect him to at least cut us off first.

“If that happens then he’s a piece of shit,” I conclude out loud. “And what time did I waste?”

“The time you spent with him.”

I squint my eyes. “He didn’t meet my daughter. He didn’t spend the night. He wasn’t a potential year that I spent getting emotionally attached.”

“Yeah, but he’s someone you fuck and?—”
