“I love you, too, Chloe. Bye.”

“Bye, sweetie.”

When I come back downstairs, I see Jillian standing at the door, handing Ethan a white paper bag. “Hi, Jillian.”

“Hi, Olivia. I’m just here to drop off your anti-anxiety medication. How are you doing?”

“I’m doing okay, but I’m definitely going to need that medication tomorrow.”

“That’s what it’s for, so please do use it. Take it easy tonight. Let this guy take care of you, okay?”

“I will, Jillian.”

“I’ll see you both tomorrow. Have a good night.”

“Thanks, Dr. Carter,” Ethan says, closing the door. “You heard the woman,” Ethan says, “go sit down, lie down, do whatever you need to do to get comfortable and rest. I’ll order us some dinner.

“Ethan, I’m not hungry.”

“Liv, you have to eat something. You have to keep your energy up for the next few days.”

“Not now. My stomach is in knots. I promise I’ll try later, okay?”

“Okay. I won’t push you.”

“Will you relax with me? I need a snuggle buddy.”

“Of course, I will,” he says with a warm smile as he pulls me into his protective arms.

We snuggle under blankets on the couch all evening catching up on some of my favorite shows and watching movies we find on TV. I finally get hungry by mid-evening, so we order takeout, and then we talk and just enjoy being with one another the rest of the night.

“I think it’s time for us to get you to bed, beautiful.” He kisses the top of my head.

“If we go to bed, will you still hold me?” I’m clinging to him, afraid if I let go, I may somehow drift away never to be seen again.

“Of course, I will.” He looks into my eyes, kissing away my fear.

“Okay, let’s go then.”

Ethan undresses down to his boxer briefs and I wear my panties and a little tank top. We climb into bed, and as promised, he holds me close. I cling to his warmth as we lie in silence for a bit, listening to the rhythm of our breathing and the beating of our hearts in sync with one another.

“I love you, Olivia.” He kisses me on the temple.

“I love you too.”

“Thank you for doing this for me tomorrow.”

“I’m doing this for us, and the family we’re going to have together one day.”

“I want you to know I promise to love you and be by your side for the rest of my life.”

“I know you will. I’m not worried about that.”

“I won’t leave you alone during your transition either. I’m going to be sure your care is the absolute best.”

“I have no doubt.” I smile to myself. I feel so safe and warm in his arms, but I need to feel more. I need to feel all of him tonight. My soul longs for that closeness with him.

“What can I do to help you fall asleep tonight?”
