“Yes. Would you like to set up here at the kitchen island?” I ask.

“That will be perfect.” She begins to pull some of her supplies out of her bag. “You and I will get to know each other pretty well, Olivia, so please feel free to call me Jillian.”

“Okay, Jillian. Thanks,” Olivia says.

“So, how are you feeling about all this, Olivia?”

Olivia shrugs. “Nervous.”

“Of course,” Dr. Carter says with a smile. “That’s to be expected.”

“Have you been a part of a transition before, Dr. Carter?” I ask.

“Yes, twice. The first was a woman in her twenties, and the second was a man in his thirties. Both were successful and free of complications.”

“That’s good to hear. So, the medication…does it manage the pain pretty well?” Olivia asks.

“Yes, but let’s talk about that for a moment.”

“Actually, Dr. Carter, there’s been a new development regarding Olivia’s transition that was brought to our attention last night,” I say before she can finish.

“Okay. What kind of development?”

“My father informed me there’s an old law stating if a human is being transitioned into a position of power within the pack, they must be turned in a public setting for pack viewing. It would have to be unanimously voted down, and some of the older members of the Combined Pack Council won’t budge.”

Dr. Carter’s eyes search both of us for a moment. “I don’t understand. I’m assuming they don’t want you engaging in intercourse in front of everyone.”

“Correct,” he says.

“So, they want you to mark her with no intimate preparation?”

“Yes.”

“In public?”

“Yes.”

Dr. Carter blows out a deep breath, shaking her head. “You understand this makes things more difficult, and, I must be honest, dangerous?”

“We do, and that’s why I’m not going to allow it to happen that way.”

“Yes, but I don’t feel like I have a choice,” Olivia says. “I’m not backing down to those who don’t like the idea of a human integrating into their society.”

“That’s brave of you, Olivia, but I need to be sure you both know everything involved with your transition and the additional complications this stipulation may bring.”

“Okay. Walk us through everything,” I say with a nod. I want to be able to present all the complications to the council when we meet with them this afternoon.

“To start, we will give you medication for anxiety which she’ll take about an hour before you wish to proceed with the marking. The bite, even during sex, would be excruciating for a human, but knowing you’re doing it dry, so to speak, the pain may be practically intolerable.” The blood drains from Olivia’s face.

“We’ll give you a partial dose of pain medication before you get started, perhaps a bit more now that I know the situation. I’ll need to discuss that with Dr. Harper. Once the marking is complete, we will be on site to immediately administer your first full dose of pain medication. The medication should control the pain and help you sleep through the process. Were you aware you will be sedated for a couple of days while the transition completes, Olivia?”

“Oh, I didn’t realize that.”

“It will be necessary to keep you comfortable. This is where I need to be honest with you both. The one wild card is that you are being turned by an Alpha male, which isn’t typical, and hasn’t been done by anyone we know. The chemistry is different. It opens Olivia up to complications, so she’ll need to be continuously monitored. Being turned without intimacy adds the additional complication of shock to the body once the bite is delivered.”

“What do you mean by shock?” Ethan asks. “What could happen to her?”

“Cardiac arrest would be the biggest concern.”
