“The thought of losing her makes me fucking crazy now, Nick! She left me once, and Ian could have taken her for good! Or worse yet, he could have killed her!”

“Remember what we talked about. This isn’t you. It’s the mate bond. Pull your shit together. She’s here now. She said it was a mistake to leave. She sure as fuck isn’t going back to Colin. She’s agreed to literally change who she is for you. I know her.She doesn’t want him. Look, her text messages tell him to stop texting her.”

“I know,” he says. “Fuck, I know. You’re right. I don’t know what happens to me. I feel like I lose control at the slightest threat.”

“You’ve got to complete the fucking mate bond so you can relax.”

“The plans are in motion.”

“Good. Now, I suggest you kiss her ass and ask her to forgive you.”

Hearing that he’s calmed down, I don’t wait for him to come to me. I walk out of the room and down the stairs with Chloe on my tail. We make eye contact and he gives me a weak smile.

“Nick, Chloe, do you think Olivia and I could get some time alone to talk?”

“No,” Chloe states. “I’m not leaving her with you behaving like you just did.”

“Chloe,” I begin. “It’s okay.”

“Are you sure, Liv?”

“Yes, I’ll be fine.” I know Ethan’s emotions are out of control right now, but I also know his instincts are driving his behavior because our bond is incomplete.

“Let them figure it out, Chloe.” Nick takes her hand, urging her toward the door.

“Fine,” she says with a heavy sigh. “We’ll go, but Liv, you know where to find me.”

I go over to hug her. “Thank you.”

“You got it.” She smiles at me before glaring at Ethan on their way out the door. There’s a moment of awkward silence as Ethan and I just stand and look at each other.

“I’m sorry, Olivia,” he says, shaking his head and looking at the ground.

“Why do you keep doing this, Ethan? What else do I need to do to prove to you that I only want you?”

“I’m struggling. Any little perceived threat makes me want to jump in and protect what we have, but I know I’m being an asshole. I’m sorry.”

“I get that your feelings are all over the place because we haven’t completed the mate bond yet, but I don’t want to be disrespected like that again. I’m changing my life for you because I want to be with you, and only you.”

He walks over and takes my hands. “I’m sorry. I was being a dick.”

“You were, yes.”

“But, why the fuck is he still texting you?”

“I don’t know, Ethan. I’m sure his pride is hurt more than anything. Colin doesn’t like losing.”

“Well, that’s just too fucking bad. I told you if he tries to get you back, it’ll be the last thing he fucking does.”

I let out a deep sigh, putting my hands on his shoulders. “Ethan, you’re going there again.”

His fists clench at his sides as he breathes hard. “I need to go have a little one on one with him. I need to put him in his fucking place.”

I put my hands on my hips and shake my head. “Oh, no. Huh-uh. That’s not happening. I saw what happened the last time you put him in his place.”

Ethan throws his arms up. “Are you fucking protecting him now?”

I really just can’t do this. This man is giving me a headache.
