“From what I’ve heard, he does most of his work away from pack grounds, so there’s not a lot they can do to stop him from making them elsewhere. However, he definitely doesn’t have a medical license or approval to use his drugs within any of the packs governed by our council. He claims to be doing it in the name of helping others. I don’t even think we know half of what he’s doing.”

“Wow, that’s so scary,” Olivia says, shaking her head.

“It is,” I agree. “There’s also one more thing,” I say, almost dreading to tell her this last bit of information.

“Okay,” she says with a nod.

“When we were in college, Ian was dating this girl from his pack. He brought her to a family gathering one day, and I may have flirted with her a little.”

“Go on,” she says with a frown.

“First of all, she was not his mate, and I never pursued her after that day, but she did break up with him and looked me up a few months after that. We hooked up a few times, but I made it crystal clear that I didn’t want a relationship. She got clingy, and I told her I was done. I found out after the fact that Ian was head over heels for this girl, and he claims I ruined his relationship with the only girl he ever loved.”

“I mean…definitely not an excuse for what Ian did to me,” Olivia says, “but Ethan?—”

“I know, I know. It was still a dick move, and I should have stayed away from her all together, but I didn’t break them up. She chased me, but Ian doesn’t see it that way.”

“Okay, I think I understand the animosity between you two a little better now.”

“It still doesn’t excuse the way he behaves or anything he did to you.”

“No, of course not,” she agrees, shaking her head.

“This is another reason it’s important for the two of us to complete our mate bond. I need to protect you, Olivia. I think we should discuss the next steps for us.” After what happened with Ian last night, I don’t want to put things off any longer than necessary.

“Agreed,” she says, taking another bite of her lunch.

“Good. My dad texted me this morning to summon us to dinner at their house tonight.”

Her face drops. “Oh.”

I reach over and take her hand. “Don’t worry. They’re all looking forward to meeting you.”

“I’m not going to lie, Ethan. This makes me nervous.”

“Relax, baby. It’s just dinner. Just be you, and you’ll be fine. They’re going to love you.”

“Okay. If you say so,” she says, releasing a deep breath.

“I’ll work on submitting your paperwork today. We can start talking about preparations for your Luna ceremony tonight at dinner with my parents. It’s customary for the Alpha’s family to handle all the arrangements.”

“Luna ceremony?”

“Yeah, it’s a formal ball to celebrate your official acceptance into the role, but before we can hold a Luna ceremony, we need your transition to be complete. I’ll talk with Max about getting a medical team set up.”

“What does the medical team do, exactly?”

“They’ll administer the medication for pain and monitor you afterward. We’ll need to have a doctor come to do some bloodwork and check you physically, and then they’ll formulate the medication for you. It’s my understanding that you should be able to rest comfortably while your transition takes place.”

“The bite—it’ll hurt?”

“From what I’ve heard, unfortunately, yes.” I reach over and rub her thigh. “The pain is temporary, and the medication should take care of the rest.”

“Wait, you said this happens during sex. So, I’ll be naked while a doctor comes in to give me the medication?”

“We’ll get a female doctor, and she’ll come in after.” Does she seriously think I’d let another man see her naked?

“Okay. I still can’t believe I’m going to be able to turn myself into a wolf. I can’t wrap my mind around it. Will I be able to shift right away?”
