“Yes.”
I’m frozen in place when he comes to me, and takes my hand. “Is this the only way we can be together?” I ask.
“It’s the only way we can be fully mated, and it’s the only way you’ll be able to lead our pack next to me. To have the pack’s respect as a leader, you will need to become one of us.”
I pull away from him, pacing the room again. “I’m sure your family wants you to meet someone you’ll be fully mated with to become your Luna?”
“Yes, of course. That’s what every family like ours wants.”
“And, this is what you want?” Tears are now forming around my bottom lids. I’m trying my hardest to hold them in, but wet droplets begin to fall down my cheeks.
Ethan comes to me and gently rubs his hands up and down my arms. “I want you, Olivia.”
“But, this is what you want? You want to turn me?” I already know what he wants, because if it didn’t matter, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. I just need to hear him say it.
“Yes.”
“Can we be together if I don’t agree to be turned?” A sudden burn spreads through my chest as the words come out.
“I would have to step down as Alpha. I’m sorry, but that’s not an option for me. I was born for this, Olivia. Whether you realize it or not, you were too. I need you to do this with me.”
“Tell her the rest, Ethan,” Chloe says.
“If you reject me and leave me, now that we’ve had sex and you’ve seen my wolf, we would both be in excruciating physical and emotional pain. It’s the mate bond’s way of ensuring we remain together, as intended.”
It all suddenly makes sense now. I pull out of his hold, shaking my head. “You trapped me. You knew this would happen, and you did it anyway to be sure I couldn’t leave you.” I scowl and shove him in the chest. “You asshole!”
“You told me not to stop.”
“I didn’t know I had a reason to tell you to stop!”
I look at my friend with tears in my eyes. “And you…you knew what would happen if things went too far, and you said nothing.”
“I couldn’t, Olivia. There’s a hierarchy I have to follow.”
“Hierarchy, my ass. I’m your best fucking friend. Like sisters, we’ve said. How could you let me go down this road completely blind?”
“Olivia, I’m sorry,” Chloe says, in tears now as well. “I thought he would talk to you before it got this far.”
I turn my focus back to Ethan, who stands with his hands in his pockets. “Let’s say I agree to this. Does it hurt? Being turned?”
“From what I know, the physical transformation can be quite uncomfortable and could make you feel really ill for a few days. Our doctors would be able to give you medication to help with the discomfort.”
“So, you know of other humans who have been turned because they’re mated with werewolves? I thought you said I’m really rare?”
“Yes, it has happened,” Ethan says. “Human mates don’t happen very often. You’re especially rare because you’re a human mate to an Alpha male. That almost never happens. I’ve never heard of it in my lifetime.”
“How would all this affect my ability to have children? I want to be a mom one day.” My voice shakes and I cross my arms.
“If you agree to be turned, we can have all the children we want with no problem.”
“Okay, and what if I don’t agree to be turned? What happens then?”
Ethan sits and sighs. “A werewolf and a human conceiving would be extremely dangerous for the baby because of developmental differences. When you start combining the two, things may not time out properly. It’s not a risk I’d be willing to take.”
“What do you mean by things may not time out properly?”
“Werewolves only have a gestational period of twenty weeks, which is only five months, so it’s far less than a human’sgestational period. It could result in complications the baby can’t survive.”
