“I missed you too,” she says, relaxing into my arms.

“Now, tell me what was so eye-opening,” I say, playing with one of her curls.

Her mouth opens to speak, then immediately closes again. Tears surface in her eyes, threatening to fall, and I’m instantly pissed at whoever made her feel this way.

“Hey…baby, what’s wrong? Jesus, you’re shaking. Please, talk to me.” I sit straight in my chair, searching her eyes and rubbing her back with my hand.

“We were shopping today and this older woman was glaring at me from across the clothing rack. I tried to ignore her, but I could feel the negativity radiating from her. I looked up again, and when I did—” She pauses as the words seem to catch in her throat.

I’m already livid on the inside, but I do my best to remain calm for her. “Go on. It’s okay. What happened next?”

“She bared her teeth at me. Like, sharp werewolf teeth, Ethan.”

My body goes rigid and I can literally feel the veins bulge in my neck. “What the fuck? How did it get that far? That’s why I sent fucking security with you.”

“She was discreet about it. I don’t think the security guys could even see it. I’m sorry.” She shakes her head and the tears start to fall.

“Olivia, no. I’m sorry. This isn’t your fault. This never should have happened. I’m so fucking pissed right now.” I pull her in, and caress her back and hair while placing sweet kisses on her shoulder and neck. “Please, tell me you told Chloe.”

“I did,” she says as we pull back. “Chloe addressed it quite effectively.”

“Good. So, she called her out?”

“Yes. Chloe made it clear to the entire store that disrespect isn’t acceptable.”

“Fucking right, it isn’t. What’s her name?”

“I think Chloe said it’s Betty. She said she’s a bitter old bitch.”

“I know exactly who she is. Chloe’s right. She’s from a part of the old school generation that would rather our world and the human world be completely separate. Some of them never leave the pack grounds. Knowing you’re here by my invitation probably has her all riled up.”

“I don’t think I’m wanted here, Ethan.”

That’s too fucking bad for anyone who feels that way. “Bullshit. I want you here, and that’s all that matters. The rest of them will adjust. They don’t have fucking a choice.”

“Ethan, I don’t want to live somewhere knowing I’m only being accepted because they’re forced into it. I don’t even know how you could make them accept me anyway.”

I shake my head, pulling her closer. “Please stop talking like this. Not everyone feels the way Betty does. I expected some stares and whispers. They have questions, which will be answered when we’re ready. Right now, the only thing that matters is the two of us and how we feel about each other. Don’t give in to them. Focus on us. Can you do that for me?” I bury my face in her neck, inhaling her scent, allowing it to relax me.

“I’ll try,” she whispers. She pulls back, rubbing my shoulders.

“Good. Thank you. I’ve been looking forward to our date tonight.”

“Me too.” She smiles, and I’m lost in her beautiful green eyes as she leans closer. Before I know what’s happening, she’s kissing me. My body immediately stiffens with arousal and my arms tighten around her waist and up her back to show my approval for her initiative. I can’t contain my smile when we pull away.

“You kissed me this time.”

“I did. Is that okay?”

“It’s about fucking time, actually.”

She giggles as I pull her back in and our lips meet again. “I better go get ready or we’ll be here doing this all night,” she says.

“I’m always up for a change of plans,” I say with a grin.

She laughs again, then stands and leaves me feeling cold at her absence. “I’ll see you soon.”
