“Can’t you just tell me? What’s the big deal?”

Chloe shifts in her chair. “I’m sorry, Liv. I can’t this time. This needs to be between you and Ethan.”

“Do you think you could at least be there when we talk about it? I think I’d just feel more comfortable.”

“Of course, if you’re both okay with it.”

“I’ll bring it up tonight. He’s taking me on a date.”

“Is that so?” Chloe smiles with a wink.

“I assumed you already knew, considering you told him Mexican food is my favorite.”

“He may have mentioned something.” Chloe grins. “How did things go last night after we left?”

“It’s like something in the air changed as soon as you walked out the door. It would be so easy to lose control with him. It got intense at my apartment yesterday too, but he said we’ll take things slow until I know everything.”

“I’m glad he has enough respect for you to slow things down. Knowing how we feel about our mates, you have no idea how much self-restraint he’s showing,” she says with a laugh, shaking her head.

“Speaking of self-restraint, he said something this morning that, honestly, sent up some red flags.”

Chloe frowns. “What happened?”

“I told him about some text messages Colin sent me last night. He said he was going to get me back, and that he’s going to find Ethan and make him pay.”

“I’m sure that went over well,” Chloe says with a sarcastic laugh.

“Ethan welcomed the challenge, and then he said trying to get me back would be the last thing Colin does. After what I saw yesterday, it scared me, Chloe. Does he really mean it?”

Chloe taps her fork on her plate and bites her lip, avoiding eye contact. I can tell she’s contemplating how much she should divulge to me.

“Your silence tells me everything I need to know,” I say as my heart rate quickens in my chest.

“No, I’m sorry. Honestly, I have no idea. He was probably just blowing off steam.”

I can’t shake the thought that he wasn’t just making an empty threat. I have no idea what someone like Ethan can get away with in this new world I’ve entered. “Has he ever—” I can’t believe I’m even about to ask this question. “Has he ever killed anyone?” I ask as my stomach twists.

Chloe’s eyes widen in surprise. “Oh…um, not that I’m aware.”

“Would he, Chloe? Is he capable of such a thing?”

Chloe shifts uncomfortably in her chair. “Listen, Liv. Things aren’t the same here as they are in the human world. Ethan is a male alpha werewolf…theAlpha. There are instincts involved. Ethan will never go after someone unprovoked, but you have to understand, that you are the Alpha’s mate. You will be protected at all costs.”

“Chloe—”

“Yes, Liv. When it comes to the protection of his mate, Ethan is capable of killing someone.”

I feel like the wind has just been knocked out of me.

“Liv, stop. I can see you’re freaking out. Nothing is going to happen. You aren’t going to have to worry about it.”

“How do you know?”

“It would be extreme, and you would be in catastrophic danger if he were to do something like that. Listen, Nick is capable of the same thing. You’ve known him for years. Are you afraid of him?”

“No, not even a little.” I feel totally and completely safe with Nick.

“Olivia, you deserve to be happy. Forget about Colin and all the what ifs. Just enjoy what you’ve been given because it’s special.” I nod as I try to make peace with the information I’ve been given.
