“Please stop following me.” I try to walk past him.

“No.” He catches my arm. “Look at me, Olivia,” he says as he gently lifts my chin. “I’m letting this go for tonight, but you either tell him by tomorrow, or I will.”

I stand in confused silence for a moment, staring into his steel blue eyes. “I’m not telling him we kissed.”

“What you and I share goes far beyond a kiss, Olivia. Your future is with me.”

My heart rate picks up, and my stomach flutters when he lays claim to me, but I shake myself out of it. “What is wrong with you? You aren’t making any sense.”

He frowns as he studies me for a minute. “You don’t understand yet, do you?”

“Understand what?”

“Don’t worry,” he says, brushing my hair away from my face. “It’ll all make sense very soon.”

“I don’t have time to stand here and talk in riddles with you. I need to go. Colin is waiting for me.” I go to walk around him to leave, but he gently grabs my hand and pulls me back to him.

“You are not to let him touch you,” he says as his lips hover over mine. His hands cup my face as he brings his lips to mine, starting slow and soft. He brushes his tongue past my lips, and I eagerly allow him in. He pulls me close, and I moan into his kiss as his tongue dances with mine. He kisses my lips gently again before resting his forehead on mine. “These lips…this body,” he says as his hands roam my back, “all of you…it’s all mine now.” He releases me, and I gaze into his eyes as I back away. “Goodnight, Olivia.”

“Goodnight,” I whisper. My eyes remain fixed on his until my head finally follows my body as I turn to walk away from him. When I get back to the lobby, Colin is standing with his phone in his hand, shaking his head.

He looks up and seems to breathe a sigh of relief when he sees me. “I was just getting ready to check on you,” he says. “Our car is here.”

“Sorry. I was feeling a little queasy,” I say, then immediately feel guilty for the lie.

Settling into our Uber, Colin’s face is red and tense. “What the hell was with that friend of theirs? I mean, what the fuck?”

“Don’t let it get to you. He was probably drunk,” I say, trying to blow off his suspicions as my stomach ties itself into a knot.

“Pfft.” Colin shakes his head. “No. He must think I wasn’t paying attention, but I saw him. He never took his eyes off of you. You’ve never met him before tonight, right?”

“No, never.”

“And the way he just lingered there, kissing your cheek—it was obvious you were there with me. Asshole.”

My hand trembles as I gently touch my well-kissed lips.

What have I done?

Ethan

I allow my mate to leave me for now. I wouldn’t want to make a scene at a wedding reception, after all. She’s human, and I know she’s in shock after the intensity of our encounter. Finding her again won’t be a problem. I know exactly where to look. I can’t stop smiling as I think about how she felt in my arms. I’ve been waiting a long time for her, and she’s definitely worth it.

“What the hell was that all about?” Nick says when I arrive back at the table. “You’ve been acting weird since you got here. What’s the deal between you and Olivia?”

“Olivia is my mate.”

Chloe coughs on the drink of wine she just took. “What did you say?”

“I said Olivia is my mate.” I take a drink of my beer and smile. Nick’s brow furrows while Chloe’s eyes bulge.

“Ethan, are you sure? Our Olivia?” Chloe asks.

“Well, she’s my Olivia now. She’s perfect, isn’t she? Petite, gorgeous body. Long, brown, wavy hair and beautiful green eyes. I couldn’t have imagined a woman more beautiful. I mean, I don’t know much about her yet, but I could sense the kindness of her heart.” Chloe and Nick exchange looks of concern. “And yes, of course, I know she’s human.”

“When did you find out? I mean, what happened?” Nick asks.

“The connection was instant. I knew as soon as I saw her. She doesn’t understand yet, but she feels it, too. When I kissed her?—”
