Ethan’s hands have now moved to either side of my face. For a moment, we simply look into each other’s eyes. He inches his face closer and closer to my own until our lips are just brushingagainst one another. I can feel the intensity of our breathing. I want this. I want him.

His lips touch mine. It’s soft and gentle at first, growing more demanding as we deepen our kiss. He pulls me from the couch to sit on his lap. My body sinks into his while my fingers play in the back of his hair, and his hands roam my back. When we finally pull apart, we stare into each other’s eyes while we wait for our breathing to calm. If kissing him always feels like this, I can only imagine what sex with him would feel like.

I stare into his eyes while I catch my breath. “It’s always so intense with you.”

Ethan sighs, still holding me close to him. “It’s incredibly difficult to be in the same room with you and exhibit self-control,” he whispers.

I giggle a little. “You think you exhibit self-control?”

His hands roam my back and I’m hot at my core when he says, “Baby, you have no fucking idea.” If he’s holding back, I’d be lying if I said I’m not curious to know what he’s like as full on Alpha Ethan Sullivan. “What else can I do to ease your mind, Olivia? I’m sure you have a lot of questions. You can ask me anything.”

“Okay. How old are you?”

“I’m twenty-six. And you?”

“I just turned twenty-five. Are all of your senses heightened, just like smell?”

“Yes.” He reaches up and gently traces my jaw with his finger. “Touch between mates is meant to connect us, so we feel something with each other we don’t feel with anyone else, like when we kissed. Sensitivity during all forms of intimacy will be elevated to a whole new level,” he says.

I clear my throat, feeling desire spread throughout my body. Focus, Olivia. “How long have you been the Alpha?”

“For about six months, but I’ve been preparing for this for my entire life. My dad had a lot on his plate with running our family business and leading the pack. I worked by his side, learning everything I could in both business and the pack, since I graduated from college. He decided the time was right for me to take over as the Alpha of the pack, and one day, I’ll take over our company as well.”

“Wow. That’s a lot of responsibility.”

“It is, but I like a challenge. I don’t give up easily,” he says looking straight into my eyes. I swallow hard and look away as I think of another question as quickly as I can.

“So, in books, werewolves are always at war with other packs and fighting in their wolf form. Do you do that?”

He laughs and shakes his head. “Now, if we’re trying to be discreet, going around transforming into our wolves, killing each other all the time probably isn’t the best way to stay hidden. So, no. We don’t do that. We handle things privately, in our own way, but we don’t go around tearing each other apart. The packs have to work together, so we have to have peace. It would take something extreme to drive us to release our wolves in the name of violence. We try to reserve our wolf for sport, exercise, spirituality, and things of that nature.”

“What do you mean the packs have to work together?”

“For starters, we have our own type of governing system called the Combined Pack Council, which consists of former Alphas of participating packs. We live by a common set of laws, and the council ensures that all the packs work together, and abide by those laws. It’s my job as Alpha to ensure that my pack complies.”

“What if they don’t?”

“I can hand down consequences for most things within my own pack, but for more serious offenses, or crimes committed between packs, the council meets to review the charges. Theydecide upon appropriate consequences for the offender, or a pack as a whole, if necessary. You also may have noticed we have satellite television, a small grocery store, and anything you might find in a small town. We make it a priority to have people like us in high places. For example, my family works in development. Let’s just say many people in prominent positions might not always be who you think they are, and we have a way of getting things done.”

“It kind of makes me question everything I’ve ever known. So, no one knows you have these secret communities?”

He tilts his head to the side, considering what to say. “We take precautions, and we have ways of ensuring things are kept confidential and protected. For example, for business purposes, my official residence is an apartment in Denver.”

“Do you bribe people?” That’s definitely how it sounds.

He rubs my back in soothing circles again. “Let’s just worry about the two of us for now.”

I instantly relax into his touch. “Tell me some interesting facts about werewolves.”

He pauses to think. “So, most of us have perfect vision, our hearing is far better than a human’s, and we can eat pretty much anything we want because we have a high metabolism, low body fat, and higher muscle mass. We are exceptionally strong and fast. We heal quickly and we’re extremely good looking.” He winks and flashes his smile while I laugh and roll my eyes.

“Earlier, you said your sense of touch and smell was stronger than a human, but I’m obviously noticing certain…feelings…when we touch, and the scent I smell when I’m around you. I’m human, so why can I notice those things?”

“Because you’re mine, Olivia. The mate bond is pushing us together.”

“All this mate bond talk is a little…well, weird, if I’m being honest. Isn’t it basically the same as saying we’re attracted to each other?”

“Yes, but it’s so much more than that.” I’m about to ask him to elaborate when his phone rings and he looks at the caller ID. “I’m sorry, excuse me for just a minute. I need to take this.” I scoot off of his lap and he stands as he answers the call. “Hey, Lance. What’s up? Are you serious? Shit.” He looks behind us to Nick and Chloe then directly at me. His jaw is tight. “What a fucking dick. Send it to me. I’ll take it from here. Thanks, Lance.”
