I drop my head forward, then throw it back, slamming the back of my head into his face. He immediately releases me, and Icry out in pain, grabbing the back of my head as I stumble away from him.

He groans and covers his nose. “You broke my nose, you fucking bitch! You think you can overpower me?” He lunges at me again as blood flows from his nose onto his white shirt. He slams me to the ground, all the air being forced from my lungs at once. I try to get up, but he grabs my ankles. I look back at him as I try to kick him off of me. He shakes his head as he draws his lower lip in under his teeth. “You’ve fucking done it now!”

I gasp for breath—my baby. I have to protect my baby. I claw at the fibers of the rug as he yanks me back toward him. I thrash violently as he pulls me up to my feet, but his grip is still stronger than my fight.

I try to knee him in the groin from an awkward angle, but it’s not hard enough to knock him down. Instead, it only serves to piss him off more. He drags me toward the window like he has a plan for some magic escape that doesn’t involve the two of us plummeting to our deaths. I continue punching and kicking with everything I have as he pulls me along with him.

He wraps his arms around me, pinning my flailing arms to my body. “Stop fucking fighting me! You’re a newbie, Olivia! A weakling human conversion! You aren’t even at full strength yet, and you’ll never be a match for me!” He drags me closer to the window.

“What the hell are you doing?”

“I’m ending this.”

“Are you fucking crazy? You’ll kill us both!”

His maniacal laughter causes the hair on the back of my neck to stand. “Oh, poor, innocent Olivia. You still have no idea what I’m capable of, do you?”

That’s when it happens. He strengthens the vice grip he has around my body and thrusts us out of the second-story window. I scream as the glass shatters and we plummet to the earth.

What probably takes seconds feels like an eternity as we fall. It feels as if we freeze in midair right before hitting the ground. I see a flash of gray out of the corner of my eye before I’m suddenly released and tossed aside. My head violently bounces off the hard ground. I groan as the pain engulfs my head, and I’m overtaken by darkness.

Ethan

Nick and I are still discussing the meeting when we get out of my car in the garage. “Want to go out back and grab a beer while we wrap this up?” I ask him.

“Yeah. Sounds good.”

I open the door leading out to the backyard, and the first thing I see is two of my men lying in the grass unconscious. “What the—fuck, Olivia.” I turn on my heel to run to the house to check on Olivia when I’m stopped in my tracks by the sound of glass shattering and a blood-curdling scream. I spin around just in time to see Ian and Olivia plummeting to the ground. That motherfucker looks at me, tosses Olivia out of his arms, shifts, and runs off into the woods.

Olivia lands with a hard thud.

Two guards from the front of the house rush into the back yard. I point in the direction of where Ian sprinted off. “Go! Chase him the fuck down and don’t stop until you catch him. Shift if you have to!”

Nick is already by her side. “Oh, God. Olivia?” he says as he touches her cheek.

My chest constricts and I run to her motionless body. “No. Fuck! Olivia!” I push Nick out of the way. My hand shakes as I palm her cheek. “Olivia? Baby, wake up. Oh, fuck. Please, Olivia.”

Nick looks me in the eye then reaches down to find her pulse on her neck. He nods and I breathe a sigh of relief.

“We need to get her to the hospital,” he says. “How do you want to handle this?”

“We’ll take her ourselves. Call Max on the way.”

“I’m on it.” Nick jumps up and runs to the car.

I gently pick her up, supporting her head and neck as I carry her to the car. I climb into the back seat, cradling her in my arms. “You’re going to be okay, baby. I’ve got you.” I lean down and kiss her gently on the lips. “Nick…the baby.”

“I know, man. Just have faith. They’re both going to be okay. You’ll get her through this.” I nod and decide he’s right. She and the baby will pull through this. They have to.

Max and some of his medical staff are waiting for us outside when we arrive. They help me unload her from the car and lay her on a gurney, whisking her away from me.

“Please have a seat inside, Alpha. I’ll be with you as soon as possible,” Max says.

“I’m not fucking leaving her. I’m going back with you.”

“Alpha—”

Nick puts his hand on my shoulder. “Ethan, man, you’ve got to give them space to work. Let them do their job.”
