“What did she see?”

“There was a moment before the marking when Dr. Harper, Dr. Carter, and I were all surrounding you. She saw a nurse go to the table where your medication was lying. Her back was to the crowd, and to most it probably looked like a nurse doing her standard routine, but this woman saw the nurse put something in her pocket as she walked away. She said her intuition just told her something wasn’t right.”

“Oh, my God.”

“Yeah, given the results of your blood work, we think the nurse likely tampered with your medication before your transition. Max believes that could be why you reacted so badly. He wants you to have your blood drawn again tomorrow to ensure the substance has cleared from your system.”

“So, what now?”

“Lance is calling her in to question her tonight. Your medication being tampered with would make perfect sense with your reaction at the transition.”

A look of panic washes over her at the realization of what happened. “Was she trying to kill me?”

“I don’t know. I do know you are not to be alone for a single fucking second tomorrow. Okay? Please tell me you won’t even go to the bathroom alone.”

“No worries there. I don’t even think I can go to the bathroom without help in that dress.”

I release a dry laugh as I thank God for fancy fucking dresses. “Well, good. I won’t take any chances with your safety.”

It’s late when we get home, and we head to the bedroom as soon as we get in the house. “Will the security team know about this tomorrow?” she asks.

“Yes, of course.” I wrap my arms around her. “I’ll inform them, but I don’t want to talk about security issues anymore.” I need to be close to her. I lean in and kiss her. I need to feel her skin against mine.

“Are you still upset about your sister and Austin?”

“Fucking pissed, but I don’t want to talk about them right now either.” I kiss my way down her neck and onto her bare shoulder, and a small moan escapes her. “I’m sorry if I seemed distant tonight. I need to work on correcting that right now.” My lips are on hers while I unzip her dress. I kiss her harder as the dress falls to the ground. My gaze lingers on her body as she stands in just her bra and panties. “God, you’re so beautiful.”

Our eyes meet as she unbuttons my shirt. “And I feel like you may be overdressed.”

“Agreed.”

“Thanks, Lance,” I say, disconnecting the call. Anger courses through my veins when I think about what he just told me. Olivia puts down her fork and pushes her plate of scrambled eggs away from her as she looks at me with anticipation.

“Well? What did she tell him?” she asks.

I shake my head. “She confessed.”

“She did?” Olivia asks with wide eyes. “Why did she do it?”

“Because she’s been dating Ian.”

Olivia gasps and covers her mouth with her hand. “What?”

“Yeah. He led her to believe they were dating, when really, he was grooming her to do his dirty work for him.”

“I can’t even believe this.”

“She told Lance that once the job was done, she went to see Ian, and he told her he didn’t want to see her anymore. Lance said she was an emotional mess, and it all just came spilling out.”

“I mean, I don’t understand why anyone would do such a thing at all, but why would she do that for someone who isn’t even her mate? She’s not his mate, right?”

“No,” I say, shaking my head, “but Ian is a master manipulator. I’m sure he said all the right things to make her fall into his trap.”

“So, what will happen to her?”
