“Look closely.” He opens his mouth to reveal his perfectly straight, white teeth. He inhales and releases a breath, and on the exhale, two of his teeth elongate into long, very sharp fangs. Sucking in a deep breath, I blink rapidly as I try to wrap my mind around what I’m seeing. I must be hallucinating. This can’t be real.

I shake my head, and my voice quivers. “How did you do that? It’s not real. Tell me how you did that!”

His teeth retract back to their normal state. “It’s absolutely real.” He moves his hands to either side of my face and caresses my cheeks with his thumbs. “You insisted that I show you, so I did.”

“No. No, this isn’t real.” I push my way out of his hold as I hyperventilate and tears form in my eyes. “I have to get out of here.” My path to the door is once again blocked by Ethan, and his hands are back around my arms.

“Olivia, no. It’s okay. Just breathe.” I’ve had enough. It’s time to remind her what she feels for me, and make her understand. “Nick, Chloe—out. Olivia and I need a couple of minutes of privacy.” I can see the instant panic in her eyes.

“I’m not staying in here alone with you.”

Chloe and Nick proceed toward the door to leave without question while I step toward her. “You don’t need to be afraid of me. I would never hurt you, and I’d kill anyone else who tries.”

“Chloe, please. You can’t leave me in here with him.”

I look at Chloe and shake my head before she says anything. “Chloe doesn’t have a say in this. Go. You know she’ll be fine with me.” Chloe and Olivia make eye contact once more before she and Nick silently leave the room.

Olivia backs away from me, crossing her arms and glaring at me. “Why are you doing this to me?”

“I’ve already told you why.” Her scent is magnified when it’s just the two of us in the room alone together, and I feel the effect she has on me straining in my jeans.

“This is insane. It’s not real. It’s not. You are all fucking insane. You are not a werewolf, and I am not your mate. I want to go home.”

I step closer to her, and I sense her heart pounding in her chest. “Olivia, you wanted proof. I gave you proof. Now, I want you to calm down, and accept the truth.”

“It doesn’t matter. I can’t be your mate.”

“Why are you fighting this? I know you feel it.”

“I’m not a cheater, Ethan. I’m committed to someone else. Someone who isn’t trying to convince me he’s a werewolf. I’ve given him my word, and I’m wearing his ring.”

“I admire your loyalty, but it’s misplaced. You are destined to be with me, not him. If he’s who I think he is, you're way too good for him anyway. I’m not going anywhere. As far as I’m concerned, Colin Burke is just a detail to be handled.”

“I’m not breaking up with him, Ethan.”

“Is that really fair to him? You know you want me, Olivia.” My own heart rate quickens as I trace my finger along the soft skin of her jaw, and she swallows hard. I walk her backward until her back is against the wall again. I caress her flushed cheeks with my thumbs. She closes her eyes, and a shaky breath escapes her as I rest my forehead against hers. “Did you let him touch you last night?”

“That’s none of your business.”

Her breathing stills as I run my thumb along her lower lip. “Answer the question, Olivia. Did you allow him to touch what’s mine?”

“No,” she whispers.

My chest lightens with relief as the strain in my jeans becomes almost too much to bear, and I release a guttural growl. “Don’t fight this, Olivia. I can feel what you want, what you need. I felt it the second I saw you. Be with me, and I promise you’ll have everything you’ve ever wanted that you can’t possibly be getting from him.”

I crash my mouth to hers, taking charge as she clings to me. Even after everything she saw here tonight, her body doesn’t pretend not to want me. My tongue passes beyond her lips, and her mouth begs me to draw her in for more. When we finally separate, we stare into each other’s eyes as we try to catch our breath, but my heart sinks when she starts to shake her head as her face goes pale.

I put my hands on her shoulders to get her to focus on me. “Olivia? Hey…take slow, deep breaths. It’s okay.”

“It’s not okay. None of this is okay,” she says right before her legs buckle beneath her. I scoop her up into my arms, looking directly into her beautiful, green, tear-glazed eyes before they close completely, and she goes limp in my arms.

“Damn it.” I run out of my office and down the hall to the common area with Olivia in my arms, where Chloe and Nick are waiting.
