There’s a soft knock on the door. “Is it okay if I come in?” Chloe’s face appears from around the door.

“Sure, honey,” Max replies to his daughter. “No tears, no stress,” he warns her. “Can you do that?”

She nods. “I’ll do my best.”

“It’s probably best not to touch her right now, honey. She’s in a lot of pain,” Max says.

“Okay,” she says. “Hey, Liv.” I try to form a weak smile, but I’m pretty sure I fail miserably. “I’m so glad to see you. Yesterday was…well, I can’t talk about it right now because I know I’ll cry.” She goes to Ethan and gives him a hug. “How are you doing?” He pulls back and just shakes his head.

“Let’s check your temperature to see how you’re doing.” Max scans my forehead. “Good news. You’re down to 104 already. If we can get you down to at least 102 degrees, which is where your normal temperature will be once your transition completes, I’ll feel comfortable giving you the pain medication again.”

Jillian is getting ready to discard the bag from the trash can I vomited in, prompting Chloe’s attention. “Was she sick?”

Jillian nods. “Yes, this poor girl has had one rough go of it.”

“Liv, once you’re a little more comfortable again, I can help you brush your teeth and get cleaned up, if you want?” Chloe offers and I nod my head the best I can.

About thirty minutes later, Max rechecks my temperature. “You’re at 102 degrees on the nose. Let’s give you half a dose so you can be comfortable enough to get cleaned up, and then we’ll give you the rest of the medication so you can rest comfortably.” Max prepares a syringe and injects the first portion of the medication. The medication works quickly, and I’m feeling at least partially relieved.

“Ethan, Nick is downstairs if you want to go for a run,” Chloe suggests.

“We tried to get him to go earlier,” Caroline says. “You should consider it, honey. It’ll be good for you.”

“She’s doing much better now, Alpha. I feel confident telling you she’ll be okay until you get back. We won’t take our eyes off of her,” Max says.

Ethan kneels next to me. “Will you be okay?” I do my best to give him a weak nod. “I promise I’ll be back soon. I love you.” He kisses my forehead before leaving. Jillian and Max both breathe a sigh of relief, and Caroline excuses herself as well.

“I’ll give you ladies some time,” Max says, leaving the room.

“Don’t worry about Ethan. Shifting and going for a run will be a good stress reliever for him. He needs to do something to release his tension,” Chloe reassures me.

Jillian prepares a warm washcloth while Chloe gets my toothbrush and a couple of cups of water so she can brush my teeth for me in bed. I don’t know of many women who would be willing to help me like this right now, but Chloe’s not justanyone. “I brought in a clean change of clothes. Do you feel well enough to let us change you?” Chloe asks, and I nod.

These beautiful women make me feel at least a little better than I did before. I may not be accepted by everyone in this pack, but there’s no doubt I’m surrounded by so much love in this house. As Chloe and Jillian finish changing me and covering me with fresh linens, I hear the voice I love most in this world.

“Hey, baby. I’m back.” Ethan kneels beside me. He’s freshly showered, and his face looks a little more relaxed. “I told you I’d be quick.” He leans in to kiss my cheek.

“I can give you a few minutes before we give her the second portion of her medication if you’d like a little time with her while she’s still able to keep her eyes open,” Jillian says.

“Yes, I would appreciate that. Thank you both for taking care of her.”

“I love you, Liv. I’ll see you again later, sweetie. You keep hanging in there. This won’t last much longer,” Chloe says before leaving.

“You’re doing great, Olivia. Dr. Harper and I will be back in a few minutes,” Jillian says as she exits the room.

Ethan kneels by the bed and very gently takes my hand in his. “Is this okay?” I nod once. “I hope you don’t mind that I left. I think they were right. I feel calmer after shifting and going for a run. After everything you’re going through for me, I owe it to you to be the best man and mate possible.”

I try to smile at him, but it’s weak at best. “You’re surrounded by so much love, Olivia. I hope you know that. We’re all so glad your fever has gone down, but no one is more thankful than me. I will spend the rest of my life making sure you never regret going through all this for me.”

“Love…you,” I somehow manage to barely whisper, but it’s enough that he hears it.

“Shh, save your energy.” He caresses my hair. “I love you too. I never knew it was possible to love someone as much as I love you.” He leans in to kiss me very gently on the lips.

“All right,” Max says, coming back into the bedroom. “Alpha, you don’t have to leave, but it’s time for our Luna to get her second dose of medication.”

“Okay.” Ethan nods and moves to the foot of the bed.

“All right, Olivia. I have reformulated things, so this should give you the nice warm nap you need to heal.”
