These past days seemed to have opened a flood gate to a different kind of self-exploration. The Volkov brothers tested both my limits and endurance. Each time I faltered, they took the reins, bringing me to heights of unimaginable pleasure.

The sound of the lock being opened reached my ears. I whirled away from the window and waited for the door to open with bated breath.

“Hey,” said Lilja, stepping inside.

“Hi,” I said, a smile blossoming on my lips at the sight of my friend.

Lilja’s long, pink-streaked hair was pulled into a high ponytail this morning. She wore black stretchy shorts paired with a denim jacket. Her long legs were encased in knee-high black boots.

“You look bad-ass,” I said.

“And you look...the same as yesterday. Hungry yet?”

I gave a nod.

“Come on, then.” She gestured at me and walked away from the threshold.

Grabbing my boots, I pulled them on and hurried after her.

“Mikhail and I have a surprise for you today,” she said as we walked down the hallway.

“Has he brought all the stuff from the fair we went to yesterday?”

“You call that roadside bullshit biker camp a fair?” she asked with a snort. “Remind me to take you to a real one sometime.”

“What about Yakim? He looked so mad last night. Is everything okay between you guys?”

“I told you not to worry,” said Lilja, throwing an arm around my shoulder and pulling me close. “My big brother’s all bark and no bite.”

He’d bitten me so many times though, I thought silently as my hand went up to a purple spot on my neck where he’d sunk his teeth a few days ago.

Still, it lifted my heart to know Yakim was unchanged despite the pain and trauma he went through. He might be an ass to me but he was still the same protective older brother to his siblings.

We followed the familiar path to the kitchen on the ground floor.

The smell of frying bacon hit me the moment I got closer. My groaning stomach made me hurry and enter the kitchen.

Dory was at the stove, stirring a smoking pot. Lilja moved ahead and went to sit at the table. Michael was already seated there, smoking what was unmistakably a joint.

A haze of smelly smoke lingered over the table. Lilja made swipes at the swirls of smoke Mikhail blew in her direction.

Mikhail’s teasing and Lilja’s annoyance made me smile. The day barely got started and they were already fighting.

“Quit it!” Lilja hissed. “I don’t want my eggs smelling like pot.”

“Leave me alone,” said Mikhail, stuffing a couple of bacon strips into his mouth. “Yakim was pissed last night. On top of that, I had to get up early to get Princess’s stuff from Ryder’s place.”

“So, that’s where you picked up this disgusting shit,” Lilja said, scrunching her nose. With a sudden move, she grabbed the joint that Mikhail set down to help himself to some toast. He didn’t even have the chance to protest before she stepped on the smoking roll and stamped it out.

A frustrated growl escaped him. Picking up a fried egg, he threw it at her. The egg hit her squarely in the face.

A deep frown came over her pretty face as she glared at her brother.

“Stop your fuckery right this instant!” Dora barked. The elderly lady’s frown made both siblings quiet down at once. She slapped a dish of fried bacon on the table with a huff and stomped away.

Taking a plate, I loaded it up with some bacon and eggs before they could start arguing and throwing things at each other again.

“Can you tell me about the surprise now?” I asked, hoping to distract them both.
