“Mikhail’s home.”

She stopped her dancing and immediately followed me.

I hurried down the hallway and down a staircase to reach the entrance hall.

Everything was quiet this late in the evening, allowing me to hear the revving sound of his motorcycle as it got closer to the manor. Standing at the door, I looked ahead, yearning to catch a glimpse of Lucia to make sure she was with him.

I glimpsed a woman in tall, tan boots, a colorful skirt, and a denim jacket seated behind him. For a moment, I couldn’t tell whether it was Lucia because of the helmet concealing her face.

It’s Lucia, I thought with relief when she awkwardly climbed off the bike and moved near the light spilling through the open doorway.

Getting off the bike, Mikhail took off his helmet while Lucia waited patiently for him. When he was done, he walked up to her, unlatched the helmet’s belt, and took it off her head.

The two of them looked like they’d bonded overnight. She was attuned to his every move now.

Deep-seated anger swelled in my chest. I was envious of the freedom Mikhail enjoyed. He didn’t wear the face of a monster and could freely go anywhere he wanted.

It was only natural for Lucia to like his company more than mine. He could offer her more than I ever could. I’d never be anything to her except for a monster who took her against her will.

Mikhail met my gaze and squared his shoulders. “Hey,” he said casually.

I glanced at Lucia. She paled at the rage that was evident in my twisted features.

“Where the fuck have you been?” I hissed at Mikhail.

“Out,” he said, walking past me.

Grabbing him by the arm, I forced him to stop. “Why didn’t you answer my calls?”

“Let go!” he said, throwing my hand off him. “I was busy and on the road most of the time.”

“You couldn’t spare a minute to text?”

“If I texted you back, you’d have wanted updates every fucking five minutes.”

“Is it a crime to worry about you?”

“Don’t start, Yakim,” he muttered.

“You’re not going anywhere without explaining yourself. Why didn’t you tell me you were taking her out? Did you even think of the risks? You could’ve been ambushed by our enemies on your way out of here. You could be dead from a sniper’s shot before you even crossed the woods.”

“You’re being paranoid. Besides, there’s no point in shouting at me now. As you can see, I’m fine. I’ve brought our precious princess back where she belongs. She’s great too. Aren’t you, darling?”

She gave a slow nod.

At least, she was smart enough to stay quiet.

“Take her back to her room,” I ordered Lilja.

“No way. I’m not missing this,” she said, shaking her head with a large grin on her face.

“Now,” I bit out.

She pouted but obeyed me. Gesturing at Lucia, she walked away from the entrance hall.

Lucia quietly followed her.

When it was just me and Mikhail in the room, I rounded on him.
