“Can’t say yet,” he said, gesturing me to climb up behind him. “I’m just giving you a tornado warning.”

I climbed up behind him with my signature awkwardness. Once I was settled, Mikhail started the bike and within seconds, we were flying down the dark, nearly empty highway.

I let the roar of the wind wash away my apprehension. Everything that I went through until now taught me one single lesson. I had to enjoy the moment without worrying about the future. It was the only way to survive these men who held my heart in their hands.

Yakim

My gaze swung toward the clock before me. It was close to ten P.M. and there was still no news from Mikhail. He took Lucia away this morning but told no one about his plans or where he was taking her.

Anxiety settled in my gut. Callum could’ve put people to watch the area around our estate. They could easily ambush Mikhail, kill him and take Lucia away.

Cold washed over me each time the thought crossed my mind.

“You haven’t eaten a thing today,” Lilja’s voice sounded from nearby. She was spread out on a couch, her long, skinny legs dangling off the side. “Do you have to worry so much about the asshat? He can take care of himself.”

“Why can’t he just answer my calls?” I shouted. “Would it kill him to give me at least one update? This is the thing I hate about him. He doesn’t respect my authority. He thinks everything’s a game.”

“He’s been dying to get close to Lucia,” said Lilja while her gaze stayed stuck on the screen of her cellphone. “You can’t blame him for grabbing the opportunity to have her all to himself.”

“He’s selfish!”

Lilja sat up on the couch and crossed her arms over her chest. “It’s kind of your fault.”

“Excuse me?”

“You don’t give her clothes to wear. She barely gets to eat unless one of us takes pity and hands her something to eat. You’re the one who’s turned her into a helpless damsel. She’s so pitiful, Yakim. Can you blame Mikhail for wanting to be her knight-in-shining-armor?”

I scoffed. “We’re no knights.”

“Well, you’re going have to learn to be one,” she said in a sagely manner. “Princesses fall for knights. There’s a reason you don’t hear love stories about fucking assassins.”

“Don’t you have anything better to do?” I asked, annoyed.

“Nope! I’m waiting for them to come back. Lucia will have a lot to tell me when she returns.”

“Why would she do that?” I asked suspiciously.

“We’re best friends now. Actually,” she leaned in and covered her mouth with a hand. “We’ve even kissed.”

“What?” I barked.

Loud chuckles escaped her as she rolled on the couch. Clutching a cushion to her chest, she stared at me like a wide-eyed monkey. “Jealous, big brother?”

Jumping off the couch, she twirled around the room with her arms flung wide. “I kissed her twice. Na na na na...”

Great, I thought, staring at my slightly crazy sister.

Being ignored by Mikhail was bad enough. Now, I had to deal with Lilja who thought it was the funniest shit to be kissing the girl her brothers wanted. We’d known her long enough to know she was straight, so this was just one of her stupid pranks to rile us up.

My phone vibrated on my table. Picking it up, I saw a text from David, the head of our surveillance team. Mikhail had been spotted speeding toward the estate.

Relief spread through my veins at once. My brother was safe.

Getting off the chair, I walked around my desk and headed toward the door. Anger chased the momentary relief I felt. Mikhail needed to explain himself tonight.

“Where are you going?” Lilja called out.
