I glanced toward my elder brother. He had to understand we were in danger. It wouldn’t be possible to stay relaxed for long because these men intended to hurt us.

“You’ve made your point,” said Yakim to the man who seemed to be the leader of Callum’s minions. “Let us go now.”

Instead of complying, he signaled to his men.

We were all shoved to the ground. Several men poured out from the stationed vans, each carrying a baseball bat.

“Fuck!” I muttered as I steadied myself on my feet. “It looks like we’re going to have to fight our way through this shitstorm.”

“Leon, watch your left,” Yakim reminded me. “Michail, don’t expose your chin and navel during the fight.”

We aligned ourselves along the points of an invisible triangle. This way, we could deflect blows meant for the person on our either side, giving them a chance to dodge a fatal attack.

There were at least two dozen men surrounding us but I was confident we could beat them together. We just needed to stay calm and focused.

The men came at us together. They were tall and broad but untrained. Their moves were clumsy as hell and soon, we were gaining an upper hand.

We each got our hands on one of the fallen baseball bats, allowing us to give back lethal blows to our enemies.

Our breaths came out in harsh pants as we continued to fight off the small army of men Callum sent to destroy us.

A part of me could relate to him. Hell, we would do the same to the guys who’d dare to lay their hands on Lucia. I just wished he’d see how my brothers and I were different. We’d doanythingto protect her and make her smile.

A loud gunfire shattered the stillness of the night, making us freeze up.

“Stop fighting back or I’ll blow your brains out,” the leader shouted, aiming his pistol at us.

Yakim gestured for us to step back immediately, his gaze focused on the barrel of the gun pointed toward us.

“What’s it going to take for you to let us go?” Yakim barked in a thunderous voice. “There’s been a misunderstanding. We don’t want any trouble with you or your boss.”

“You’re not leaving this place on your two legs,” said the man in a cold, emotionless tone. “Whether you get to keep your lives is dependent on our master’s whim.”

I glanced at Yakim. His face was a mask of fury but cracks were beginning to appear in his brave façade. I could tell he was having a hard time trying to find a way to get us out of this situation.

Mikhail was the same. His gaze darted between the gaps among the men surrounding us, but there was no way out, not when someone was aiming a gun at us.

“Drop your weapons,” the man commanded.

Without a choice, we dropped the bats to the ground.

I grit my teeth and balled my fists. We were completely at their mercy now.

The men we’d beaten earlier came at us with raised weapons.

“What do we do, Yakim?” My younger brother asked in a fear-choked whisper.

“Survive,” Yakim replied in a cold tone.

Ever since the day we were thrown out into the streets, this was the only mantra we’d held on to. No matter what came at us, we had to survive it.

We’ll survive this too, I told myself as the first blow fell on my back.

Gasps and pants escaped me as a rain of merciless attacks fell on me and my brothers. Instinct made me want to fight and block the blows, but the loaded gun aimed at us forced me to bear the torture.

After a while, my body stayed on the ground. A couple of broken ribs poked at my sides, making any movement feel like torture. My breathlessness troubled me. Did Lucia’s brother truly intend to kill us?

Heck! We even spared the bastards talking crap about her.
