“What? Fucked?”

“Yeah,” I muttered, the burning sensation spreading across my chest.

“Nah, I don’t get hard for bitchy women,” said Mikhail.

A bubble of hope swelled inside me. I smiled, looking toward the colorful display of clothes and scarves near the tents.

“Hey, Jacky!” Mikhail called out loudly.

“Mikey!” a young guy hollered back and waved enthusiastically.

“Long time no see,” said Jacky. He wore a jacket that was similar to the other bikers here. Dusky red locks fell into his clear blue eyes as he squinted at Mikhail. His boots were dusty and the smell of gas clung to him. “And who’s this?” he peered at me closely.

“She needs some clothes,” said Mikhail.

“No shit,” he said as an amusing grin spread over his heavily freckled face. “She’s kind of pretty but what’s with the men’s jacket and those ugly pants?”

“I borrowed them,” I muttered.

“It’s all my fault,” said Mikhail. “I made a mess of her beautiful gown.”

Jacky guffawed like an idiot but he didn’t seem as venomous as Kiara.

“Get whatever you like,” said Jacky. “All on the house. And for fuck’s sake, get some shoes too.”

I glanced at the slippers I borrowed from Lilja yesterday. The delicate material was already dirty and fraying.

“Choose something you like,” said Mikhail. “We’ll get better stuff once we’re in the city.”

“I can choose what I like?”

A frown came upon him. “Did Callum control what you wore too?”

I gave a grim nod. “He said I looked best in dresses,” I said in a bitter tone. “He never allowed me to wear trousers and shorts.”

“Fuck that bastard,” he hissed, his gray eyes flashing with rage.

His anger was like a balm to my aching heart. People only saw a girl who lived in a big mansion. They saw my polished clothes and makeup, assuming I was happy. No one knew the pain and darkness I struggled to suppress every single day.

“Go crazy,” Mikhail said through clenched teeth. “Heck! Walk naked. I’m not going to care and if anyone looks at you wrong, I’ll stab them in the balls.”

“Maybe not do that,” Jacky muttered.

I laughed, feeling lighter than I’d felt in years.

Moving forward, I sifted through the jeans hanging from the stands. They were all beautifully embellished with sequins and colorful threads. I chose a bell-bottomed pair with floral patterns sewn onto the thighs.

“Nice,” said Jacky, moving closer to me. “How about you pair it with these tops?” He turned me toward another stand that displayed long-sleeved tops in georgette and cotton. They were all colorful with bold patterns and designs on them.

The girl in me seemed to awaken. I forgot everything as I sifted through the clothes on display.

Mikhail hovered in the background as Jacky proceeded to show me more clothes, jewelry, and shoes. He didn’t comment even when I chose to buy a ridiculous sombrero hat with a wide brim.

It was a short break from being painted a villain by Mikhail and his brothers. The shopping trip allowed me a breath of free choice and I was grateful for it.

“Where can I get changed?” I asked while Jacky dumped a scarf inside the garbage bag that contained the rest of my stuff.

“In there,” he said, pointing to a tiny tent nearby.
