Yakim guided me back to my new prison. All through the way, he stayed quiet and looked ahead while I stared intently at his badly disfigured face and tried to find a glimpse of the boy I once knew.

Opening the door to the room, he shoved me forward.

“Wait! Don’t go just yet,” I said as he was turning away. Throwing myself at him, I clung to his arm.

He stared down at me coldly. “What do you want?”

“Are you John?”

Something flickered behind those ice-blue eyes. “John’s dead.”

“You know what I mean,” I said. “Were you and your brothers my childhood friends? Is that how you know me and Callum? Are you hurting me to get even with Callum for what he did to you those seven years ago?”

He stepped toward and leaned forward.

Out of instinct, I squeezed my eyes shut. Immediately, I regretted my reaction to him.

Callum was the one who destroyed his perfectly handsome face. My brother was the reason he looked like a disfigured freak now. I was the last person to act scared and disgusted at the sight of him.

“I’m sor—” Before I could apologize, he’d already turned around and was walking away. The door slammed shut behind him.

My lips quivered as my heart ached.

I could only imagine the terror and pain John must’ve gone through when Callum cut up his face like that. He must’ve shed so much blood. His beautiful smile was still etched in my memories. He’d never look in a mirror and see it again. Callum robbed him of his identity.

“All because of me,” I moaned bitterly as tears ran down my cheeks.

I thought of Leon and the scar cutting across his left eye. That had to be Callum’s doing as well.

For the first time, I realized why they were so hateful to me. They thought I supported Callum’s decision to hurt them and kill them.

I punched the mattress in my frustration. The truth was far from what they imagined. I never forgave my brother for taking them away from me.

Over seven years passed by and I still missed them every day.

I punched the mattress over and over again, finding no means to escape the bitter emotions rising inside me.

“What did that bed do to you?” said an unfamiliar female voice.

Looking up, I saw Lilja standing at the threshold and leaning against the doorframe.

Quickly brushing my tears away, I straightened up.

She sauntered across the room toward me. Coming to sit beside me on the edge of the bed, she hooked a finger under my chin and lifted my face to her.

“I can see why they’re going through such troubles for you,” she said in a soft voice while her dark brown eyes studied me intently. Shifting closer, she moved a lock of my hair away. “Are you into women?”

“Huh?”

Leaning in, she pressed her lips to mine.

I gasped from the surprise.

She swept her tongue along my lips before deepening the kiss.

I stayed frozen, wondering what the hell was happening. Why the hell was I being kissed by her? We were strangers to each other.

“How did that feel?” she asked, looking at me.
