“Then, who?”

“No one,” she muttered, her gaze sliding away from my face.

“Did you get involved with the incident that happened at the club last night?”

Her widening eyes told me I was hitting closer to the truth.

“What incident?” she squeaked.

“They found the body of a man whose throat had been slit open,” I said, relaying the news I read in the headlines that morning. “They also found a woman who’d been drugged and left in one of the bathroom stalls where the corpse was found. I had a feeling Leon was involved but you were there too, weren’t you?”

“It wasn’t Leon’s fault,” she insisted. “How would he know what that creep was up to in the ladies’ bathroom?”

“Tell me what happened,” I said with a threatening growl. “Don’t miss a detail or I’ll make my brothers pay.” It was an empty threat but enough to scare her.

She blurted out the whole story, telling me over and over that Mikhail and Leon weren’t to be blamed for what happened, that everything was a coincidence.

Deep inside, I felt the choke of a familiar fear. It was a deep-seated terror that Callum Baldwin had buried in my mind. I hated knowing my mistake or ignorance could cost me the life of someone I loved and cherished.

Casey Martelle had been reported by several victims. He was a lawyer who knew how to use the law against the women he preyed upon. The creep lured young women into thinking he was a friendly, laid-back dude.

When they lowered their guard, he poisoned their drinks and raped them. Some of his victims were roofied while the others were merely incapacitated while going through the terrible ordeal of being torn apart by him.

The thought of this man laying hands on Lucia sent a thrill of terror through me. She was so soft and vulnerable. Her bastard brother kept her imprisoned in their home, never letting her see the ugliness of the world outside their glittering mansion.

My arms wound around her, pulling her against me.

“Yakim?” she whispered with a hint of confusion.

I held onto her, savoring the feel of her soft, warm body.

The urge to devour her completely overcame me. Leaning in, I captured her lips. She opened up to me but I sensed her hesitation.

Didn’t she want me?I wondered as my insecurities played out a cruel scene in my head. Maybe she still abhorred my ugly, ruined face. Why would she ever want me when my brothers were unblemished and whole?

I still want her, I decided stubbornly, forcing my hand between her thighs and cupping her sex. My tongue dove deep inside her mouth, giving her no chance to reject me.

A sharp pain suddenly shot through the tip of my tongue.

Breaking apart, I glared at her. “Did you just bite me?” I growled.

Lucia was breathing hard, her eyes betraying the fear she felt.

“I don’t like it when you’re forceful,” she said, panting hard. “Why do you have to bully me so much?”

“It’s the only way to make you accept me.”

A strange emotion came over her. “That’s not true.”

I scoffed. “Tell me this face doesn’t disgust you.”

“It doesn’t.”

I looked at her closely, trying to see if she was lying.

Lucia was staring back at me. “You disgusted me when I thought you were a stranger hurting me. My feelings changed when I realized who you were.” A frustrated look came over her. “I’m sick of repeating myself! Here, let me show you.”

To my astonishment, she closed the distance between us and smashed her mouth to mine. Her arms wound around my neck tightly as she pulled herself against me.
