I felt the sharp prick of Leon’s blade on my throat.

“What are you thinking about?” he asked in a soft, seductive tone.

“Nothing,” I said, intently holding still until he decided to remove the blade from my neck.

“Nothing?” Yakim questioned with a raised eyebrow.

“I’m glad you’re all here,” I said truthfully. “You have no idea how many nights I prayed for you all to be safe. Eventually, I stopped though. When the years rolled on and you guys never showed up, I started believing Callum. I believed you were dead.”

Surprise flickered in their eyes.

“It pained you to think we were dead?” Leon asked.

I glanced between him and Yakim, and gave a nod, hoping they’d believe me.

A week passed without any incidents of break-ins and attacks. The upgrades in my new room kept me comfortable as well as entertained to an extent.

Lilja bought me a Kindle Paperwhite when she realized I had a love of reading. It’d barely been a few days but the device was already loaded with my favorite books.

I could’ve downloaded new books but a part of me craved for the comfort of familiar characters and stories. Callum burned down my precious collection of books when he found a copy of Fifty Shades of Gray in my possession.

Reading romance books will turn your mind into a filthy pit, he’d screamed while I begged him not to destroy my books.

I was no fan of the BDSM lifestyle but the popularity of the books had piqued my curiosity. The novel also gave me my first taste of the modern contemporary romance genre.

Thinking back, I could only wish Kindles were popular a decade ago. That way, I could’ve had the privacy to read whatever I wanted without Callum knowing.

Callum’s absence made my spirit heal. Even though the freedom to leave the room was denied to me, I felt safe and comfortable here.

Thoughts about Dad still nagged me though. I didn’t mention a word to Yakim because every time I did, he’d get mad at me.

Yakim’s attitude toward me was slowly changing. He was relaxing in my presence enough to even dine with me. If I continued to stay patient, he might eventually allow me to call Dad.

A knock sounded at the door, followed by the beep of the electronic lock.

“Mikhail!” I exclaimed, throwing my Kindle away and jumping off the bed.

Running forward, I threw myself at him.

“Hey, hey,” he said with a chuckle and caught me in his arms.

I hadn’t seen him for almost a week. Every time I asked Yakim and Leon about him, they said he was busy working.

Rough stubble darkened his handsome face. His hooded jacket and jeans were matted with dirt. Even the strands of his ash-blond hair looked dusty.

“Where have you been?” I asked, stepping away to take a better look at him. “You stink.”

A laugh rumbled in his chest as he pounced on me and hugged me tightly, squishing my face against his hard muscles. “Where’d all that enthusiasm go?”

He loosened his hold, allowing me to breathe once again.

“Where have you been?” I asked again. “You look like you haven’t showered in a week.”

“I didn’t,” he said with a shrug.
