Noah was like a beautiful statue carved of ice— cold and immovable.

To see him break down before my eyes, revealing all the cracks in his façade, fractured my heart a little too. For the first time, I was coming to believe his words.

He truly felt guilty over the way he treated me.

If Noah broke that badly, I could only imagine how horrible it had to be for Corey and Caleb. They were always open about their feelings and wore their hearts on their sleeves.

Their absence worried me.

I wished they’d come back to annoy me as they used to before. They were expertly avoiding me now, both in the office quarters as well as the hospital.

My gaze fell on the clock in the corner of my laptop’s home page. It was close to four P.M. already. Deciding to call it a day, I started packing my stuff.

I was heading home early over the past couple of days to cook for Brian.

He didn’t complain about the hospital food but he devoured the chicken noodle soup I made him the first day.

That’s how I knew he was craving for some homecooked stuff.

For tonight, I decided to make him some pasta with turkey meatballs. It was one of his favorite meals and I was glad Mom taught me the recipe too.

Grabbing my bag and jacket, I walked out of my office.

Mallory was at her desk, reading something on her desktop screen.

I took a moment to study the carved silver beads strung along two thick, pink braids. A diamond stud dotted the left side of her nose. She’d chosen to wear a bright orange jacket with haphazard stripes of black that reminded me of a monarch’s wings.

“Hey, are you leaving already?” she asked, finally noticing my presence.

“Yeah. You can head home if there’s nothing urgent to work on.”

She grinned brightly.

It always amused me to see how happy my employees looked when I gave them time off from work. She didn’t smile like this even when I raised her salary last month!

“Did Corey and Caleb come to work today?” I asked.

“Yep.”

A disappointed hum escaped me. They were still avoiding me.

“That’s it then, I guess.” With a disappointed mumble, I turned away from Mallory’s desk and stepped out of the reception area.

The corridor outside was deserted as I headed toward the elevators on the far side.

“Milla.” A familiar voice called out from behind me.

Whirling around, I met with Corey and Caleb, standing only a few feet away from me.

The light smile on their faces sent my heart throbbing in my chest. They looked breathtakingly handsome in their identical gray suits that deepened the green of their eyes.

“Hey,” I breathed.Get a hold of yourself, I chided myself.Don’t get too excited.Clearing my throat, I tried again. “Where have you guys been all this time?”

“Were you worried?” Caleb asked with an amused grin.

“I was,” I said in a grim tone. “Why were you avoiding me?”

Caleb glanced at his twin before looking back at me. “We needed time to process everything.”
