If only Noah, Corey, and Caleb could understand this. What was the point of holding onto an old rivalry? Wasn’t our present duties more important than the petty conflicts of our college days?

If I could force myself to work with them, they should at least be able to deal with Luke in a calm manner too.

A low knock sounded on my door.

“Come in, Mal,” I called.

The door opened but it wasn’t Mal.

“Are you busy?” said Caleb, peeking around the door’s edge.

Corey poked his head over him. “Can we come in, Milla?”

I let out a defeated sigh. Their presence reminded me of the dinner at their house tonight.

“Come in,” I said, casting a gloomy look at the mountain of untouched folders in front of me. There was no way I was getting to any of them today, which meant I needed to get an early start tomorrow.

“Are you still coming over for dinner tonight?” Corey asked, sitting on a chair by my table.

“Yeah,” I replied. “I want to try making things comfortable between us too.”

“Oh, they’re quite comfortable,” said Caleb, wagging his eyebrows suggestively.

My cheeks heated at once.

“Give us a chance, Milla,” said Corey, gazing at me with a serious look. “Together, we can take this company to the next level. I know we come off as easygoing but when there’s a job to be done, we get it sorted. Just ask Noah. He’d be nothing without us.”

“I don’t doubt you guys,” I said with a soft smile. “Everyone talks about how well you guys have been handling your responsibilities and supporting Brian. Why couldn’t you just go on riding your motorcycles and partying all night?”

Corey snorted.

“I know we made it look effortless but that’s not an easy lifestyle to maintain,” said Caleb, his eyes shining with mischief. “We decided to retire and give the young chums at Silverlake U a chance to shine.”

A light feeling slowly came over me, taking away all my stress. It felt good to talk to them after the day I had.

“You okay?” Caleb asked, leaning on the table. “We heard what happened.”

I was alert at once. “Who told you?” I blurted, wondering whether Mal spoke to someone about the fight and spread the news all over the office.

“Relax,” said Corey. “Noah told us.”

“He’ll probably not say it to your face but he’s grateful about the way you handled the situation,” said Caleb with a grim expression. “Beckett riled him up and he let the bastard get to him.”

“I thought he was smarter than this,” I said as my old frustration crept back, making my head throb again. “He should’ve ignored Luke.”

“Beckett talked dirty about you,” said Corey. All humor was wiped off his face. “He talked about watching the sex clip and jerking off to it. We’d have done the same and more if he’d dared to talk about you like that before us.”

Corey and Caleb’s eyes darkened with the promise of blood and violence.

A jolt went through me, feeling their possessiveness wrap around me like a blanket.

“Luke’s going to mess with your head too,” said Caleb. “He’ll do his best to play you against us. You’re our only weakness and he knows where to strike.”

A sliver of disappointment snaked through me.

Luke had been such a good friend to me back in college. He was by my side during one of the worst periods in my life. I hated that our friendship meant nothing to him in the face of his business goals.

“I need a drink,” I said, shutting my laptop down. “Will you guys join me?”
