“Well, you guys can take the day off to relax,” I said. “Drive the car back and rest up. I’ll take a cab to the office and notify you of my plans in the evening.”

Tom sniggered. “I have a feeling we’ll have the whole day andnightfree today.”

Greg frowned at Tom while he winked at me.

“Could you guys take this stuff back home?” I asked, gesturing toward the bag that contained my clothes.

“Sure,” said Greg. “We’ll drop them off for you.”

“Thanks. And don’t forget to drop the key card at the reception when you leave. I guess I’ll catch up with you guys later tonight.” With that, I headed out of the room.

With nothing else to worry about, I walked out of the hotel.

The weather was chilly but the sunshine was warm.

Walking down the street, I hailed a cab. It was close to ten A.M., so I wasn’t going to be terribly late for my second day at the headquarters.

It was kind of a relief to be going to work on my own.

No matter how much I enjoyed myself with Corey and Caleb last night, there was still a lot at stake at the moment. I didn’t want to complicate matters until Noah was defeated.

I needed to remember they were still Noah’s brothers. Their attitude toward Brian was at best lukewarm. There was a chance they’d eventually side with Noah.

I couldn’t allow myself to relax with Corey and Caleb. It was important to remember why I was here in the first place.

The thought calmed me down.

As long as I kept my eyes on the goal, my heart wouldn’t become a hindrance.

My phone vibrated in my hand as I climbed up the stairs to reach my office on the first floor of the main headquarters building. Looking down, I saw Brian’s name flashing on the screen.

“Hey,” I said, panting a little. “Sorry, I’m running a little late today.”

“That’s all right, kiddo,” he said with a chuckle in his voice. “I was wondering if you’d come home this evening. It’s time we tried breaking the ice between you and my sons.”

I thought of last night. Between me, Corey and Caleb, we’d not only broken the ice but also melted it into a puddle and then evaporated it into thin air.

“Are you asking me over for dinner?” I asked in a level voice.

“Yes,” he said, exhaling a heavy breath. “It’s been too long since I’ve had dinner with you. You’re too skinny these days. I’ll cook you your favorite pasta with hot dogs if you come over.”

I chuckled. “That sounds yum. I’m never able to make my pasta taste the same as yours.”

“You’re missing the secret ingredient, sweetheart.”

Reaching the first floor, I came to a halt. “All right, then. I’ll come over but please warn Noah. He’ll make a scene if he sees me at the dinner table. Let’s not waste a perfectly good meal over his pouting.”

“He won’t make a scene. I’ll make sure of that,” Brian said in a suddenly grim tone.

“Okay, then. I’ll see you around seven.”

Switching off the call, I looked ahead. The door to my office complex was open and my assistant was already at her desk.

Taking a deep breath, I walked inside.
