Brian was the reason I was sitting here and planning my revenge on Noah and his brothers. Talking to them was going to be a pain-in-the-ass but maybe seeing Noah’s loser face would make it all worth it in the end.

“So, do you want to head home and get changed for the dinner party later tonight?” Brian asked.

“That sounds good,” I said, slumping against the backrest of my couch. “I want a break before I can put on my game face again.”

Brian chuckled.

“Also, I want to stop wearing shoes.”

“Kiddo, just wear something comfortable,” he said, looking serious again. “They all care about how much money you can make them. Nothing else.”

“Nah. These clothes and shoes are my armor when I go into battle.”

A sad look suddenly came over him. “You know, your mom wanted you to be happy. Sometimes, I wonder if I’m doing the right thing by letting you take up my position.”

“I’ll be happy when I’ve put Noah in his place,” I said in a determined voice. “I won’t let myself celebrate before that.”

“You’ve achieved tremendous things on your own, sweetheart. You should be proud of that. I know I am.”

My heart swelled at those last words.

It felt amazing to hear he was proud of me. I missed Mom a lot but Brian filled up the space she left behind. He never let me feel alone.

I strapped on my stilettos again and stood up. “I’ll see you in a couple of hours, then.”

He gave me a thumbs-up as I turned away to leave.

Walking through the doorway, I checked my watch. There was still enough time for me to go home, take a nap and get ready for the formal party in the evening.

I found Tom and Greg snoozing on the couch in the reception area. The elderly receptionist gave me a small smile and gestured toward them.

I silently told her to let them be. They could have a few more minutes to rest while I quickly used the restroom down the corridor.

Stepping out of the office lobby, I walked down the empty hallway to reach the ladies’ room. The whole bathroom was empty, giving me ample space to complete my business and then, take my time to retouch my makeup afterward.

Feeling good, I stepped out of the bathroom. Just as I was about to walk forward, I felt a hand slap over my nose and mouth.

The sudden attack didn’t leave me any space to struggle as a massive, hard body slammed into my back. A powerful arm wrapped around my waist, keeping me chained to my attacker.

I didn’t even get the chance to scream. Within seconds, a heavy veil closed over my senses, leaving me paralyzed and helpless.

What was happening to me?

My phone rang as I was going through a list of specifications sent by a client. Looking away from the blueprint of a hammer drill spread before me, I picked up my phone and saw it was Corey’s call.

“Hey, what’s up?” I asked, keeping my gaze on the draft.

“You need to come into my office right now.”

The tone of his voice sent a thrill through me. “What are you up to?” I whispered even though no one was in the room with me.

“Just get in here. Now!” Corey switched off the call.

Pushing my chair back, I stood up and hurried out of my office.
