“Is that the reason you brought those men with you?”

“Yeah. You saw how Corey was this morning. He didn’t care we were in a boardroom filled with staff. Both he and Caleb spoke without any restraint in front of Mr. Keating.”

“You should know that Corey and Caleb spent over two years looking for you before giving up,” said Brian. A somber expression came over his aging handsome face. “You didn’t want me to talk about them but they never gave up on you, honey. I think you should give them a chance.”

“Have you forgotten what they did to me?”

“I’m not saying this because they’re my sons, Milla,” he said in a grim tone. “But they both regretted treating you that way. I witnessed the fights that went on between Corey and Noah. If you spend enough time with them, you’ll see that Corey still hasn’t forgiven Noah for driving you away. I truly believe Corey wants to help you.”

“You’re still too naïve when it comes to your sons,” I muttered and lowered my face, pretending to sip my tea.

“Did you honestly feel nothing when you saw them?”

He caught me unaware with that question.

I was nearly undone by the sight of them. My heart pounded heavily while my body yearned for their touch.Fucking hormones, I cursed silently.

“Milla?” Brian urged.

“It doesn’t matter what I feel,” I said. “I just need to focus on getting your throne.”

“It’s good to be goal-oriented but don’t let it become an obsession. Don’t become blind to everything else.”

“What are you saying?” I asked, feeling confused. “Don’t tell me you want me to extend an olive branch to those assholes.”

“Their support will cement your position in this company.” He poured himself another cup of tea. “You’re smart, Milla. Find a way to work with them. They’re not going anywhere. If you’re serious about the post of CEO, you’ll have to find a way to make peace with them.”

“It’s impossible.”

He gave a slow nod. “I told you not to go down this path a long time ago, kiddo.” He let out a long breath. “Holding grudges will weaken you in the future. Talk to them. Make peace with your past. Don’t let it torment you anymore.”

Anger flared inside me. “You want me to forgive them? That’ll never happen!”

“Relax,” he said calmly. “You can take your time. Just know that you’ll eventually have to talk to them.”

His words made sense but I couldn’t bring myself to face reality.

Five years ago, I wanted to snatch the most precious thing away from Noah Amhurst. His father’s throne was within my grasp now but things weren’t so simple anymore.

Becoming the CEO at Amhurst Co. meant taking an enormous responsibility. No matter how much I hated the Amhurst brothers, I loved their father. I couldn’t ruin what took him a lifetime to build.

Secondly, hundreds of livelihoods were connected to the operation of Amhurst Co. There was no way I could mess around with that.

Suddenly, I felt stuck. The elation from handling the boardroom meeting faded away as reality stared me in the face.

Becoming the CEO of Amhurst Co. would mean chaining myself to the Amhurst brothers forever.

On the other hand, giving away the position would mean handing everything to Noah on a fucking diamond-encrusted gold platter.

“Fine,” I bit out. “I’ll try to be nice to them.”

Brian smiled. “There’s the smart kiddo I know so well.”

I frowned. “Why do you have to be such a wise-ass all the time?”

He burst out laughing and slapped the armrest of his couch. “I’m glad you think so highly of me, honey.”

His cheerful grin coaxed me to smile too. I’d been lucky to have him in my life. Without him, I’d be completely lost.
