It helped to have her support me but our progress down the shadowy tunnel was slow. The feel of her soft, warm body was comforting. It almost lulled me into believing we were going to escape our prison.

“Stop right there!” A venomous voice shouted from behind us.

We froze and slowly turned around.

Bill stood several feet away, pointing a gun at us.

Milla instantly moved from my side and came to stand before me. Throwing her arms out, she stood her ground, guarding me.

“Let us go,” she said in a grim tone. “Things don’t have to get worse than this.”

“Get back here,” I hissed, grabbing her arm and pulling her toward me.

She easily threw me off. “I’ll distract him,” she whispered through the corner of her mouth. “Just take the stairs and you can go out.”

I cursed silently. She was still thinking of staying back here.

“Put your gun down,” said a different voice.

“Is that Nick?” Milla said in a confused tone. “How’d he get here?”

ItwasNick Civella. He was aiming a gun too but it was pointed at Bill.

Bill glanced at Nick but his aim didn’t waver. His gun was pointed at Milla.

“I’ll destroy you, bitch,” he hissed. “No one messes with me and gets to live.”

Fear snaked around my neck, choking the air out of me. Milla didn’t notice it but Bill was ready to pull the trigger.

“Get out of the way!” I shouted, pulling her out of the way and wrapping my arms around her.

A loud gunshot echoed in the tunnel just as I pressed her against my body. Next second, something hit my shoulder, piercing through flesh and bone, causing a pain so intense, my eyes widened from the shock but I was barely able to utter a sound.

Three more gunshots were fired next.

Maybe that one bullet was enough to break me because I didn’t feel the others penetrating my flesh. Warm blood gushed out from the spot where I was hit, soaking my shirt. Rasping breaths escaped me as I struggled against the pain.

“Noah,” Milla’s scared whisper sounded close to me.

I tried to respond but couldn’t think beyond the pure agony in my body.

My knees buckled but my body didn’t hit the ground. Milla was still holding me.

I tried to tell her to run. To hide.

No matter what happened to me, she had to stay alive. I couldn’t fail to protect her a second time.

“Noah! Noah!” Milla’s voice sounded as if she was calling me from a faraway place. “Stay with me. Please, Noah. Don’t close your eyes. Please, please...”

Silly girl, I thought. She should be running.

A thick black veil fell over me, numbing me to everything around me. I wanted to stay awake to make sure Milla was safe but I lost the fight against my beaten body.

Noah’s body collapsed on me. Holding him tight, I lowered us to the ground while my ears rang from the echoes of the gunshots.
