Corey and Caleb were the only ones who could help me now but could they figure out where Luke was hiding me?

Desperation and helplessness choked the air out of me. Tears poured down my face. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t accept what was about to happen to us.

“What’s taking them so long?” Corey muttered for the hundredth time.

I glanced at the ornamental clock in the entrance hall. It was already past two A.M. Noah and Milla should’ve been home at least three hours ago.

Anxiety cut through my exhaustion.

“Did you try calling them?” I asked, looking up from my laptop.

“They’re not picking up,” said Corey. “They haven’t read any of the chat messages I sent them after nine.”

Grabbing my phone, I checked my chat app too.

“The last message I got from Noah was at about nine-thirty,” I said, rereading the short text. “He said they’d be home by eleven after having dinner at Raydon Street.”

“That means they went to that Chinese restaurant Noah likes.”

“They wouldn’t take this long to eat,” I said, feeling my anxiety rise. “And even if they were stuck there, they’d have at least called or texted.”

“I have a bad feeling,” said Corey. “Ever since Milla disappeared on us, I’ve been secretly keeping tabs on her. I freak out when I don’t know where she is.”

“That’s fucked up, man,” I said, casting an accusatory gaze on my twin. “She’ll be fucking mad if she ever finds out.”

Corey had the decency to look ashamed. Looking at his knees, he muttered, “I don’t want to lose her again.”

“No one wants that,” I said with a sigh. “Anyway, forget about that for now. Are you sure they went to the Chinese restaurant?”

“That’s what Noah said,” he said, holding up his phone.

“I’m calling Murray.”

Corey’s face turned hopeful at once. He sat down and watched me dial the number on my phone.

“Hey, Amhurst,” said a surprised voice. “It’s been a couple of months since you last called. Did your obsession with that girl come back to bite your ass again?”

Joe Murray was a detective at Silverlake City PD. He was one of the officers often asked to look up CCTV footage for police investigations. Corey and I became friends with him in college and ever since he’d joined the police force, we used him to keep a lookout for Milla.

“We need you to find her,” I said in a grim tone.

Murray let out a sigh. “I thought you were done with her for good.”

“This is serious,” I said through clenched teeth. “Camilla has been back in Silverlake City for over three months now. Lately, things have been going well between us but something went wrong tonight. She’s missing.”

An exasperated huff escaped him. “Let me understand this. You’re saying she returned to Silverlake City?”

“Yes.”

“And she’s gone missing again?”

“Yes,” I stressed.

After a moment’s silence, he asked, “How long has she been missing?”
