“That wasn’t a consultation,” he said with a chuckle. “That man’s the chief engineer on this site. He was showing me how we were progressing and what plans he had in mind to finish the job in time.”

We walked around the site, sometimes stopping to watch workers lay bricks, weld, dig, and carry away rubbish and trash from the site. Every turn showed me a different activity.

“I can spend an entire day here and not get bored,” I mused, feeling the energy of the space pulsing through me.

“Doesn’t the dust and loud noise bother you?”

“Not really. I can always have a shower when I go back home.”

He stared at me with a grim look. “Will you ever stop surprising me?” Grabbing my wrist, he pulled me to a lone corner.

Hooking a finger under my chin, he lifted my face toward him and captured my lips in a soft kiss. Even though he was gentle, I could still feel his possessiveness in the way he held me against his hard body.

All exhaustion seemed to leave my body as the kiss heated me from deep inside.

“Let’s look around some more,” said Noah, taking my hand. “Oh, wait. Shit!” His expression turned angry. “What the fuck are you doing, Milla?”

I stumbled back on a loose rock and would’ve landed on my ass if he didn’t catch me in time.

“What did I do?” I asked in a scared whisper as I stared up into his cool silvery eyes.

“You’re not wearing protective gear,” he said through clenched teeth. Pulling me up, he steadied me on my feet. “I can’t believe I let you come this far without a fucking helmet. Your carelessness can shut down the whole site. Don’t you have any idea how important it is to follow safety measures at a construction site?”

An embarrassed blush heated my cheeks at once.

My sole aim in life was to do everything with as much perfection as possible. I couldn’t believe I made such a basic mistake as to enter a construction site without protective gear.

Part of me wanted to believe Noah distracted me but if this cost the company, I’d be the one to regret everything.

“Stay here,” he huffed. “I’ll be right back.”

I wanted to be angry with Noah for his sudden outburst but knew he was right to call me out on my bullshit. Someone running a construction company needed to know how a careless accident could put a stop to everything.

I waited until Noah came back to me.

“Here, put this on first,” he said, pushing a yellow helmet on my head. With a focused gaze, he arranged the hair strands sticking out from the sides.

“Next, these gloves,” he said, proceeding to incase my hands in thick, heavy gloves.

Noah kneeled before me and started taking off my shoes. “How the fuck were you walking around in these heels? A fucking nail could’ve stabbed you in the foot. Hell, you could’ve broken your ankles.”

Fussing and cursing, he removed my shoes and put my feet into heavy, thick-soled boots.

Laying my hands on his shoulders, I felt his love rather than his anger.

Noah was mad because he was worried about my safety.

The thought made me smile despite the guilt eating away at my gut.

“I’ll do better,” I promised him when he straightened up again.

Closing his eyes, he let out a heavy breath. “I’m sorry, Milla. It’s just that I worry—”

I placed a finger on his lips, stopping him from making an apology.

“Don’t,” I said. “I was being careless.”

He looked into my eyes, staring deeply.
