“You okay?” he asked, kissing the top of my head.

“Yeah,” I said, still not feeling like putting on my clothes.

“Let’s go have some lunch. I’m starving now.”

I chuckled, pulling away from him. “Why did you have to remind me?” I groaned. “I wanted to lie here for a while longer.”

Standing up, he went over to the door to retrieve my pants.

“Let’s go,” he said, handing it to me. “If my brothers knew I was working you hard without feeding you, they’d kill me.”

All threats and warnings were washed out of my mind. I stuck my tongue out at him playfully and started getting dressed.

It was close to seven when the cab dropped me by the vast construction site. Even though it was completely dark, the field lights erected all around the area made it as bright as daytime.

Walking slowly, I took in the sheer amount of activity happening all around me. Groups of masons busily moved about the site while gigantic cranes dug out the earth. Flashes went on and off as welders worked on steel frameworks.

Men’s shouts mingled with the sounds of heavy machinery.

I never realized how absolutely enthralling it was to construct a building from scratch. The scale of work happening all around me was humbling.

This project is going to teach me some valuable lessons, I realized.

My gaze fell on Noah in the distance.

A white helmet was perched on his head as he focused on a blueprint someone was showing him. He’d lost his jacket and the sleeves of his white shirt were rolled up to his elbows.

Noah wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty.

I need to be like him and spend some time learning about the processes happening here, I decided, walking toward him.

Even though I was near him, I didn’t disturb him and the man talking to him. It was nice to simply watch them.

Noah worked as hard as me, and yet, he never cared how all the praise and attention came to me. I finally understood what mattered to him. He was happy as long as Amhurst Co. progressed and flourished.

I couldn’t have done any of this without him, Corey or Caleb.

Noah was always hanging out at the site while Corey and Caleb were out of town most of the time, getting us more manpower and machinery to complete the mammoth task so we didn’t fall behind schedule.

Their support made me feel stronger than ever before.

My conversation with Juniper made me anxious momentarily but being with Caleb wiped all my fears away. Even tonight, I’d go home with Noah.

I was no longer alone like I was back in LA.

My head moved toward the sky as my thoughts went to my mom.

This is what you wanted for me all along, didn’t you?I asked her in silent prayer.

It didn’t even matter that I couldn’t call Brian ‘dad’. Just knowing that he was my father was enough of a solace for me.

“Hey,” Noah’s voice broke me out of my thoughts.

“Hi. Done with the consultation?”
