“There’s someone at the gates,” he whispered. “It’s a man called Nick Civella.”

“Oh.” I hurried to get off my chair.

“He’s got a truck full of armed men with him,” Hubert continued, looking worried. “The security at the gates has stopped them. You should talk to your guest right away.”

I glanced toward Irene.

She was giggling happily after slapping a star-shaped pastry on Noah’s forehead. There were cut-out pastry shapes stuck to Corey and Caleb’s ass as well.

Someone needs to teach her they’re not stickers, I thought amusedly before following Hubert out of the kitchen.

Out in the hallway, I took my phone and called Nick.

“I was about to call you, Azalea,” he said in a deep, calm voice. “Your men are refusing to open the gate. Can you tell them to cooperate before I put holes in their heads?”

“You’re welcome to come inside,” I said in a grim tone. “But your men stay outside. This is a family home, not one of your casinos. No armed strangers will be allowed inside.”

A chuckle came in through the phone. “Nothing fazes you.”

A scoff escaped me. “It’s going to take a lot more than a truckful of armed goons to faze me. Leave them outside and come in. My valet will show you the way into the house.”

Switching off the call, I looked over at Hubert.

“Please escort Mr. Civella to the entrance hall,” I said. When he continued looking worried, I added, “It’ll just be him. And I’ll be close by too.”

Hubert gave a grim nod.

I followed him to the entrance hall to receive Civella. It was important to talk to him before bringing Irene to him right away.

While Hubert walked out to bring Civella in, I took a moment to compose myself.

Civella walked in five minutes later. His gaze roved all over the place, probably looking for hidden assassins behind the large porcelain vases in the room.

“Hello, Mr. Civella,” I called out in a polite tone.

“Azalea,” he said, extending his hand toward me.

I took his hand in a firm grasp.

“Call me Nick,” he said, flashing me a smile. “You look beautiful today.” Leaning in, he planted a kiss on my cheek.”

An awkward chuckle escaped me. I quickly stepped away from him before he could steal a kiss on my lips.

“Where is she?” he asked, his expression turning grim.

“Come with me,” I said. “She’s in the kitchen with Noah, Corey, and Caleb.”

A dark look came into his eyes. “What? You’re letting those men get near her?”

I turned away from him. “Just come with me.”

His feet thudded behind me ominously as I led him further inside the house.

I won’t let him intimidate me, I vowed to myself.

I turned around to face him when we were near the kitchen. Quietly, I put a finger on my lips, gesturing for him to stay quiet.

Opening the door slowly, I stepped aside so he could take a look inside the room.
