Mallory adjusted her jewel-rimmed glasses and stared at Caleb without blinking. “She’s not going home.”

“I’m going to New York City,” I said in a low voice. “I’m not coming back until Civella agrees to let me have the lands around Fairmount and Joshmeyer Square.”

“You’re going alone?”

“I’m going to try talking to him one-on-one,” I said. “Besides, Noah isn’t around. And, let’s face the facts. Nick’s the only person who can get us out of this mess. I’ll stay in New York until I’ve made a deal with him.”

“Noah’s gone to collect Dad from the chiropractor’s studio,” said Caleb. “Maybe that’s why you missed him. Why don’t you let me come with you?”

I thought of his suggestion. Having someone with me would take the edge off walking into Nick Civella’s den alone but it was also important my companion didn’t rub him the wrong way.

“I don’t know...”

“It’s not safe for you to travel on your own so far,” said Caleb in a grim tone. Moving closer, he whispered, “Have you forgotten what happened on your way back last time? You don’t even have those bodyguards around anymore. If you want to go to New York City, I’m coming with you.”

A cold shudder ran through me at the memory of that night.

My car was fixed up now but the mechanic confirmed someone tampered with the controls.

Someone out there didn’t want me walking around on two legs.

I gave a nod. “Okay, then.”

“Come on.” Catching hold of my hand, he led me out into the hallway. “We’re taking my car today. I’ll know if anyone messes with it, although I doubt whoever tried to kill you and Noah would play the same trick twice. We’ve got to be careful, Milla.”

“I know.”

My hand stayed in Caleb’s hold as he led me down the hallway to reach the elevator. People stared at the spot where our hands were locked together but he didn’t seem to care at all.

I ignored the stares too.

There were far dire things circling my mind than what a few people thought of me and my relationship with the Amhurst brothers.

Reaching the underground car park, I followed Caleb until we were standing before a glamorous-red Porsche. Unlocking it, Caleb opened the passenger side door for me.

“Where’s Corey?” I asked as he strapped his seatbelt.

“He’s in Philly attending a vendor meeting,” Caleb replied, driving the car toward the exit.

Silently, I felt grateful to have Caleb by my side.

Having him or one of his brothers at my side always made me feel safe and protected. Their presence lessened my stress, freeing me to make better decisions.

The car soon left the city traffic behind and entered the highway, presenting us with an amazing view of faraway hills and woods all around us. Most of the trees lining the road were bare but it was still a great view after spending too long in the concrete jungle of Silverlake City.

I lowered down the window, enjoying the cool early evening breeze.

It was also probably the only reason I caught sight of something strange in the woods in the distance.

“Caleb, can you stop the car?” I said, craning my neck back to look at the spot we’d just passed.

Caleb slowed the car. “What’s wrong?”

“I think I saw a child back there.”

Stopping the car, he turned around to look as well. “Where? I don’t see anyone.”

“Not on the road. I saw her in the woods.”
