“Yep!” She winked at me.

I opened the discreet cabinet that contained Caleb’s stash. Bringing out the bottle, I unscrewed the cap and handed it to Milla.

She took a deep swig and swallowed hard, her face screwing with the effort. A small cough escaped her.

“Are you all right?”

“Yeah,” she said, wiping her mouth and handing me the bottle. “That should be good enough for now.”

I took a sip and leaned down to kiss her.

“It’ll all be okay,” she said, gazing into my eyes. “Wewillfind a solution.”

Even though I didn’t know how we’d fix our mistake, somehow, I trusted her.

I looked over at my calendar. Exactly a week had passed since my meeting with Nick Civella.

Picking up my desk phone, I called Mallory. “Have there been any calls from the Civellas?”

“Nothing yet,” she replied in a small voice. “I’ll let you know if they call.”

Disappointment weighed heavily on me.

There was just no way I’d let Amhurst Co. be destroyed by the Becketts without a fight but time was running out. Nick Civella was the only one who could help me out of this mess.

Maybe I should pay him another visit. The thought immediately took root in my mind. After all, this matter was urgent for me and nothing to worry over for Civella.

Ignoring the massive number of emails in my inbox, I called Noah’s office. My gaze swung toward the clock on the opposite wall as his phone kept ringing.

It was already close to five P.M.Where can he be?I wondered.

Maybe it was better I saw Civella on my own. He’d probably be more serious without Noah’s presence. Last time, he alluded to wanting to date me and keep me with him, but his proposition was kind of ridiculous.

Why would he want to date a busy, uptight businesswoman like me when there were tons of pretty young women flitting around his casinos and bars? It made no sense.

Still, Civella intimidated me.

Be brave, I told myself. This isn’t the first time you’re doing something like this by yourself.

Continuing my pep talk, I grabbed my jacket and purse.

“Hey,” my assistant called me as I walked out of my office. “Where are you off to?”

“I’m going to New York.”

“What?”

“Civella needs a reminder. And I can’t afford to wait around for him.”

“Whoa, what’s this?” a different voice spoke up.

Turning around, I spotted Caleb coming toward me. His gaze raked me from head to foot before focusing on my handbag.

“Someone needs to mark the day,” he said with a grin at Mallory. “Your boss is finally going home at a normal time.”
