Noah strode forward and tapped on the countertop, waking the young guy with a start.
“We’ll need two rooms for the night,” Noah spoke in a deep, grim tone.
The guy who looked barely older than seventeen stared up at him with curious eyes. Once he’d taken his time checking Noah out, he glanced over at me.
“There’s just one room that’s available,” he said, gazing back at Noah. “You’re going to have to share.”
“What do you mean?” Noah demanded. “This motel’s not popular enough to be at its full capacity.”
I approached the counter and squeezed Noah’s hand to calm him.
“The owner’s doing renovations,” the guy explained. “That’s why most of the rooms are unavailable at the moment.”
Noah turned toward me. “What do you want?”
“Me?”
“Can you handle spending a night in the same room as me?”

“Come on,” he said, gesturing toward the hallway leading toward the rooms.
