“I don’t know.”

The crash left me disoriented. The pain in my back and legs flared from time to time but until he reminded me, I hadn’t felt the chill creeping through my light jacket.

He hurriedly took off his scarf and wound it around my neck. Next, he shirked off his long coat and wrapped it around my shoulders.

“What about you?” I asked. “Now, you’re going to be cold.”

“I’ll be fine.” His gaze raked me from head to foot. “Shit,” he cursed under his breath. “You’re bleeding.” His fingers gently brushed over the wound on my forehead.

“We’ve got more important things to worry about right now. What do we do now? How do we get back home?”

“I’m afraid we’re going to have to walk more,” said Noah. “If I’m not wrong, there’s a motel about a quarter of a mile from here. Our cellphones will work there and we can call for help.”

“Let’s spend the night there and call Corey and Caleb in the morning,” I said, remembering how they were in Jersey City tonight. “They’re not home right now and I don’t want to worry Brian about us.”

“Yeah,” Noah agreed. Coming closer, he took my hand in his. “Let’s go, then.”

Instinctively, I squeezed his hand and huddled closer to him.

This late at night, the deserted road seemed to stretch on forever.Maybe it’ll turn into a portal to hell or some shit, I thought, falling prey to my overactive imagination.

My gaze darted into the dark shadows of the woods lining both sides of the highway. It was so easy to imagine monsters lurking there, waiting to grab us.

I slowly glanced up at the man I was clinging to.

At the same time, Noah looked down at me.

What if he turns into a monster too?My mind whispered at me.

With a strangled cry, I jumped away from him.

Noah stared at me with a confused look while my heart pounded against my chest. “What’s wrong?” he asked, looking unbelievably confused.

Noah Amhurst can be so cute, I thought deliriously as chuckles escaped me.

“What’s funny?” he asked, looking even more confused than before.

“It’s nothing,” I said, jogging back to his side. Chuckling at myself, I wound my arm around his, clinging back to his warm body. “I think I hit my head a little too hard.”

“Are you feeling all right?”

“Yeah, I’m fine,” I said, glad that he didn’t have a clue to all the absurd things I was imagining. “How much longer?”

“Won’t be long now,” he replied. “Look for a sign that says Magnolia Inn.”

After I was done freaking out, I slowly started enjoying our walk.

The night air stopped being eerie and started feeling romantic. Suddenly, it felt like we were the only two people in the entire world.

Noah’s presence made me feel safe and warm.

For the first time, I realized that Noah’s patience was as solid as a mountain.

He didn’t blame me for the accident that left us stranded in the middle of the night. He didn’t even curse me for nearly getting him beaten up or worse, dying in a mobster’s underground casino.

While he didn’t joke around like Corey and Caleb, his quiet, solid presence made me feel just as good as they did.

Feeling naughty, I sniffed at him. He smelled of lemon and rosemary, making me inhale deeply. Liking his scent, I rubbed my cheek on his arm.
