“Come on,” she whispered under her breath, turning the key again. The engine did more of the same, but this time, it began to whine.

It wasn’t going to start. No fucking way.

Of course itwouldpick tonight to crap out.

Eli bent down and peered into the car again. “So,” he said cheerfully, “how’s it going, Wilkes?”

Holly leaned her head on the steering wheel with a groan. “You are such an ass,” she muttered. “You know that, right? A complete and total ass.”

He grinned when she looked over at him. “Maybe, but I’m also an ass with a working vehicle. Let me give you a ride home.”

“I’d rather walk all the way home in my three-inch heels than go anywhere with you. Take your ride and shove it.”

Holly pushed open the squealing car door, not caring that he had to jump back to avoid being hit. Grabbing her purse from the passenger seat, she scrambled from the car and pulled out her phone.

“Who are you calling?” he asked.

“An Uber.”

“Why would you pay for a ride when I’m right here, offering you one for free? That’s just a poor financial decision.”

“Gee, I don’t know, Eli,” she said, giving him a sickeningly sweet, mocking smile. “Why don’t you ask yourself that question and see what answer you come up with?”

“Holly, it’s a fucking lift home. Not holy matrimony. Stop posturing and take the damned ride.”

She glanced down at her phone with a sigh. Penn was probably already at home, and she really didn’t have the cash to pay for an Uber anyway.

“Fine,” she muttered, walking back over to her car. She opened the driver’s side door and pushed down the lock.

“Really?” he asked, an amused look on his face. “Where do you think it’s going when it won’t start? Is someone going to Fred Flintstone that thing out of here using the hole in the floor?”

“Shut it,” she ordered.

“Whatever you say, boss.” He pulled his keys from his pocket. “Come on, I’m parked a few sections from here.”

She followed him over to a sleek, black sedan.

Eli held open the door for her as she climbed inside, taking a seat on the luxurious leather. Holly peered around the vehicle, noting that it still had that new car smell.

The whole thing just screamed wealth and style.

Her car just screamed “wash me.”

“How much did you have to drink tonight?” she asked as he slid behind the wheel. “Are you okay to drive?”

“I stopped drinking hours ago,” he assured her. “I’m fine.”

The car purred like a kitten when he started it up, and for some reason, that made her even angrier than she’d been a few minutes ago. It was irrational and she knew it, but it was the truth.

“Can you punch your address into the GPS?” he asked, nodding toward the built-in navigation system.

Holly rolled her eyes and tapped at the screen as they pulled out of the parking lot.

“There you go, Mr. Rich and Famous. Now you will have no problem navigating the incredibly long distance to my apartment. It’s barely twenty minutes away, you know. This is hardly necessary.”

He shot her a curious glance. “It’s just easier than constantly asking where I have to turn.”

“Whatever you say.”
