“Well? What’s the problem, exactly? Is it one and done?”

The thought of never kissing him again feels like cement poured down my throat, blocking my airways and making everything hurt from my teeth to my stomach.

“I don’t know. We haven’t talked about it.”

“What an ass!” I have to pull away from the phone speaker before she damages my eardrum.

“No, he’s really busy.” My shoulders slump, because why am I making excuses for him? I don’t know if he’s busy or if he’d rather take a nap than come over.

“Bullshit,” she exclaims.

“He’ll come over as soon as he can.” I’m so pathetic I roll my own eyes.

Shawna makes a sound like she’s about to bust a gasket. I’ve witnessed her explosive energy many times. She’s probably at the edge of her seat, biting her lip to keep from saying something I’m not going to like.

“Say it,” I prompt, needing her spontaneous reaction. It’s preferable to this guessing game I’m playing by myself.

“Why are you waiting for him to come over? You have a car and you know where he lives. Go to him.”

“I don’t know his schedule.” Wow, I sound lame.

“For fuck’s sake, call him and ask. This isn’t rocket science, Ana.” Shawna uses an annoying expression that is especially condescending from a person planning to be a rocket scientist. God, I hate it when she’s right.

“Won’t that seem, like, needy?”

When she speaks, her tone has softened. “If you want to see him, tell him. If Bryce can’t handle your needs, then maybe he should have kept his tongue to himself.”

“Shawna!”

“Please tell me he’s good with his tongue. God, the worst thing about high school boys is they kiss like there’s a slippery fish trying to wiggle into my mouth. Disgusting!”

I shudder at the thought that maybe I’m the slippery fish, but then Bryce’s voice echoes in my ear.

Your kiss is heaven, Ana. But you need more, don’t you? Need me to show you what that pretty tongue of yours can do.

“He’s, um, he’s really good.”

“Hell yeah! I knew it.”

“You think I should go to him?”

“I’ll take you right now.”

“No. Let me ask about his schedule first.”

“Let’s just drive by together. C’mon, I’m bored. If he’s not there we can check out the new bubble tea place. But if he’s there…”

“Yes,” I burst before losing my nerve. “Yes, let’s do it.”

“Be ready in fifteen.”

She arrives just as I finish securing my hair in a ponytail. Shawna knows the front door code, so she’s in my room before I get downstairs.

“You can’t wear that,” she says. “You can’t look the way you always do.”

The mirror shows my baggie cargos and hoodie, which is what I had worn to school.

“You haven’t seen each other since kissing, right?” Shawna asks.
