Handsome Bryce is common knowledge. The smoldering, passionate version of him feels like an intimate secret.

My fingers softly tickle the skin around my belly button, recalling Bryce’s touch. Holding my breath, I linger lower to tease the bud that’s been thrumming since Sunday night.

I wonder what he’s doing now. Is he lying in bed like me, reliving the breathless moment our lips locked? Does Bryce realize how that kiss altered everything?

Canceling my date with Darren that night wasn’t difficult. After all, I needed to go home and clean up. A blush creeps up my cheeks, recalling how my arousal ruined my underwear.

It’s been four days. Bryce and I have only managed a few texts. He is notoriously busy with different jobs and various obligations. That’s on top of schoolwork whereby he’s transitioning straight into a fully funded master’s program. He already has the credits to graduate with a degree in engineering but of course they want him to stay. He’s brilliant and hardworking and dedicated.

And wow, can he kiss.

My ringing phone makes me jump. It’s Shawna’s name on the screen, which brings me relief as well as disappointment. As much as the thought of Bryce’s voice on the phone fills me with excitement, I also realize the limits of my experience.

What’s next after a kiss like that? Do I really want to know?

My body screams yes but my mind isn’t as confident. Is he volunteering to give me the experience I seek, or something more? If his kiss can light my body on fire, what is it doing to the rest of me?

I can barely focus on anything except the memory of his confession: That blew me away, Ana. I guess I’m saying what happened was incredible. Overwhelmingly so.

The ringing stops and sends Shawna to voicemail. She will never leave a message, so I expect the text when it comes.

Shawna: I’m picking you up at seven tonight.

Me: I have a presentation in French class tomorrow. Let’s get together in the weekend.

Shawna: Fuck the presentation. You already got into college. What’s really going on?

Before I formulate a response, she calls again. Shawna is the most persistent person I’ve ever met, so there’s no getting out of this conversation.

“Hey,” I answer.

“What’s going on? You’ve been moping all week. Is everything OK?”

She doesn’t know about what happened between me and Bryce. It didn’t feel right to talk to other people when I hadn’t processed things with him. But days have dragged on, and nights have been torture. The secret is eating me up.

“Bryce and I…” Pausing, I try to put together a sentence that captures what happened between us.

“You better finish that sentence, Ana,” she growls impatiently.

“We kissed.”

Plus, he blew my mind and he’s just as overwhelmed as I am and there’s an ache in my body that can only be eased by kissing him again.

“Kissed-kissed?”

“Yeah, you could say that.”

“That’s awesome! What’s the problem? He can go in and out of your house easily. You can finally pop your cherry before you leave for college.”

“Yuck. That’s a terrible expression.”

“Pardon me. I meant to say give up your v-card,” she states with a snicker. “Or do you prefer deflower?”

“Shut up! This is Bryce.”

“Exactly. There isn’t a virgin within ten feet of Bryce who hasn’t thought of cherry popping, I guarantee it,” she exclaims with a snicker.

“Gross,” I groan.
