“Sure.”

She picks up her phone and taps away on the screen until she’s found what she’s looking for.

She points the screen at me, and I’m not sure what I’m looking at until she says, “These are your babies, babe.” She turns the volume up. “Listen to their heartbeats. They’re strong and healthy.”

It’s her scan. I’m swimming in guilt as I watch the little blobs on the screen.

“I should’ve been there with you.”

“Yeah, you should’ve, but I had Rudi, and you’ll be at the next one.”

Yes, I will. Nothing will keep me away next time and all the times after.

“Do you know what they are?”

“Not yet. We should find out at the next scan. Are you hoping for sons?”

I laugh. “Fuck. At this point, I don’t know what I’m more afraid of, sons like me and Myles or daughters… like me and Myles.”

She laughs, and it soothes my heart in ways I didn’t realise I needed it to.

“If we have daughters, they could take after me,” she argues.

“They’re twins, they already take after me.”

“True.”

I repeatedly play the video, Aspen’s head resting on my shoulder. New life is coming into the world.

Two souls departed, and two new ones arriving. Victoria will have something to say about it, but for now, I’m happy I’m here finally doing the right thing.

“Mase?”

“Hmm?”

“Can you take me home now?”

Closing my eyes, peace settles over me, and grief hits me.

“Yeah, let’s go.”

She puts her phone away and quickly packs the few items she’s unpacked back in her bag. I carry it down for her, her hand firmly in mine.

“About fuckin’ time!” Myles hollers from the bar. “Can we go home now and make sure Grump’s ghost isn’t haunting the brothers.”

“You here to make sure he got here, or what?” Aspen giggles, going to hug my brother.

“Something like that. I can’t have my nieces or nephews, or niece and nephew, living out here in the city. One is enough in little River.”

Aspen throws her arm around him, and momentarily stunned, he hugs her back while I keep hold of her hand.

“We’re leaving first thing in the morning. Let us know if you need anything,” Angel says as I pull my old lady back to my side.

“I think it’s pretty much covered, but thanks.”

Fuck, I’ve never thanked so many people so many times in my life. But I am thankful Aspen said she’ll come home.

We say our goodbyes, and I lead Aspen out to the truck with Myles limping behind. Throwing her bags in the truck bed, I open the door for her. She jumps in and scoots over into the middle. Myles takes the wheel, and I keep my arm around Aspen as I take the end.
