“You’re already on thin ice, brother. Start any more shit, and you’ll fall through.”

“Who said I started it?” Mason grunts, running his tongue over his teeth.

“I did. I know you, and I know you went out of your way tonight to fight.”

“Fuck this.” Mason swipes his beer from Leo’s grip and leaves. Leo leans back in his seat and gets Zach’s attention. “Watch him.” Then he’s on me. “You need to get him on the level, Myles.”

“Fuckin’ hell, he’s just been through Hell. Cut him a break.”

“I haven’t knocked him on his ass, trust me, this is me cutting him a break. We lost a good brother. Never mind he was your dad, that shit was on me. Get him under control, or I will.”

I slide out of the booth and step outside just in time to see Mase take a key from Zach and let himself into a room. I dig my phone out of my pocket and call Emma.

“Hey. You don’t know how much I love seeing your name on the screen when it rings.”

I smile. “Sorry, it’s so late. We’ve stopped for the night, thought I’d call and let you know.”

“It’s okay. I fell asleep on the couch. I needed waking. How are you doing?”

“A little pain but nothing the meds don’t take care of. How are the kids?”

“Asleep.” I can hear the smile in her tone. “It’s been a long day with them. Your mom has been a Godsend, I don’t know what I’d do without her when you’re gone.”

The mention of my mom has my gut twisting up. “Though she’s getting pretty vexed waiting on your dad to call. If I were him, I’d get on the phone before you get home, or he’s gonna feel your mom’s wrath.” She laughs.

I feel bad keeping Dad’s death from Emma, but I know if I tell her, she won’t be able to hide the grief on her face. She’s too pure and kind. She’d break and tell Mom, and I won’t be there with her.

“Yeah. Hey, I need to go talk with Mase. I’ll call you in the morning. We’re setting off at first light, so I’ll be home tomorrow.”

“I can’t wait to see you.”

“Same. I love you.”

“Love you more.”

Ending the call, I put my phone away and cross the street. I let myself into the room Mason stepped into and lock up behind me.

Through the open bathroom door, Mason is sat on the edge of the bathtub, his tee bunched between his teeth so he can check out his wound.

Since there’s no blood bath going down, I relax. Somewhat.

“You’re pushing it with Leo,” I start.

“Right now, brother, I couldn’t give a fuck.”

“You should start…”

“Yeah, I’ll get on it.” He looks up at me, his jaw tense. “Stop looking at me like that.”

“Like what?”

“Like you feel sorry for me.”

“I do feel sorry for you. You’re spiraling and not letting me in.”

“There was a time you would’ve enjoyed spiraling with me, and fuck the consequences.”

“Is that what you need? You need me to spiral with you.”
