Cas comes around the side of the bed, and I take hold of Myles’s hand.

“I’m sorry, Myles. So fuckin’ sorry. He was shot as we rushed to the house. He didn’t feel a thing…”

“Headshot?”

Cas nods once, and Myles’s eyes fixate on the ceiling above him. They don’t stray.

“Does my mom know?”

“Not yet. We decided to wait until we knew how you and Mase were going to fare…”

“Don’t tell her, not over the phone. We’ll tell her when we get back. Me and Mase need to be there for her.”

“What about Pope? Do you want us to tell him? He’s gonna want the heads up.”

“He can live without this time. He’s weak, he won’t be strong enough for Mom… No, me and Mase will handle it once we’re home.”

“Okay. What about Victoria?”

“Oh fuck, she’s going to be heartbroken.”

“I can get Luca to break the news to her. You know he’ll be at her side for as long she needs him.”

“I know,” he whispers. “Fuck, I need Mase. I can’t make all these decisions.”

“You’re doing great so far,” I tell him.

“Am I? I’m the joker, the one that fucks up on a daily basis. Mase is the one who thinks for us… I need him to think for us now. I need him to wake the fuck up.”

“Hey, lean on the club. It’s what we’re here for. Give the words, and we’ll get shit done,” Cas urges.

“Excuse me, Mason is awake again.”

The three of us look at the nurse in the doorway. I jump up to my feet and rush out of the room.

He’s still awake, and I rush over and take hold of his hand.

“I’m still here?” he asks, his tone reeking of pain.

“Yes, and so is Myles.”

His eyes dart to mine. “He is? But he… I saw him go.”

“You saw him lose consciousness. Leo got you both to the hospital in the nick of time.”

“Where is he?”

The sting of him not being happy to see me hurts. I breathe through it and press on.

I point to the wall and tell him, “He’s in the next room. He’s awake and talking with Cas.”

“Okay, good. Get my dad in here, will ya? I need to…” His eyes narrow as he stares at me. “What?”

I was relieved to let Cas tell Myles the worst news of his life, but with Mason, it’s my job. I’m his old lady, no matter what was happening between us.

“Babe, I’m so sorry. Your dad was killed in the shootout. He’s gone.”

“The fuck he is!”
