“I suppose,” I murmur.

“With Mase back under, and Myles awake. Go sit with him while I go tell the brothers.”

“Okay.”

Cas heads out of the ward, and I step into Myles’s room, finding him still with his eyes open.

“Mase? Where is he?” he asks straight away, his voice coarse.

“He’s in the next room. He’s doing about the same as you, only he’s drifted off again.”

He doesn’t move, but his eyes flit around the room, and he asks, “What happened?”

Ricky lying lifeless on the grass fills my mind, but I push it out and tell him, “It was close, Myles. So fucking close, I couldn’t bear it. Why didn’t you tell me how bad you were?”

“Nothing you could’ve done. Mase, he was shot. He’s alive, yeah?”

“So far. It was touch and go for both of you. Leo got you to the hospital just in time.”

“And the gangfucks?”

“All dead.”

“Em… has anyone called her? Have you spoken to her?”

I shake my head. I’m not going to tell him I’ve spent the last twelve hours sleeping.

I look out the window, and no one is around. I dig out my phone and pull up Emma’s contact information. I hit dial, and his relief is tangible.

It rings once before she breathlessly answers.

“Aspen, please tell me something. I can’t get a hold of Mase, and Leo isn’t saying anything.”

I place the phone on speaker and rest it on Myles’s chest.

“Hey, babe. It’s me.”

“Myles? Oh my fuck, you don’t know how much I needed to hear your voice. Are you okay? What’s going on?”

“First off, I need you not to worry. I’m okay… okay?”

He gets a meek okay in reply before he goes on to tell her, “I’m in the hospital. I’m a little beat up, but I will be fine. I’m sorry for the last few days or weeks, I don’t even know what day it is. I hate you’ve been worrying about me.”

Her sobs fill the line, and I look away, attempting to give them some sort of privacy.

“Baby, I’m good. Hear my voice. Listen. When I know more, I’ll let you know, but I guess I’m gonna be in here a few days, and then I’m coming home straight to you and our babies. Yeah?”

“Yeah,” she says, sniffing. “Myles?”

“Yeah, babe?”

“Don’t do this again. It’s been hell.”

Penelope must hear her father’s voice.

“Daddy?”

“Hey, sweetie,” Myles says, putting on a lighter tone.
