But with my shots ringing loud comes deep voices, fully aware shit is kicking off. Keeping my back to the wall, I slowly make my way to the nearest door, which should be into the living room. The door to the dining room is opposite and farther up the hall.

Numerous boots have the wooden floorboards creaking up a storm, and bodies are coming. It’s now or die.

Since I don’t have time to die, I imagine my brother at my side, my brothers at my back. I swing around and fill the doorway. They already have their guns drawn, but I’m runningon not giving a fuck. Somewhere in the distance, I hear shots being fired, reminding me of a shoot ‘em up game me and Myles used to play as kids—a war zone.

Six guns point at me from before me, and from the sound of safety catches being released behind me, I count six more.

“You didn’t come alone, but you are alone right now,” someone says from behind me.

I don’t move to look at him.

I say, “You think that’s something that worries me?”

“Cocky for someone who’s about to die.”

Keeping my eyes on the pricks in front of me, I smirk.

“That’s what you think. Your first mistake, hesitation.” Letting off a shot from each gun, I take down two pricks as I fall to my knees.

The first rule of being arrogant is to be aware of your surroundings. As the adrenaline courses through me, bullets flying, I roll to the side into another room and roll up onto my feet, slamming the door shut. Bullets hit the wood but don’t make it through.

“Nice of you to show up. Kept me waiting long enough.”

Grinning, I look over my shoulder, and there’s my brother and old lady. I make quick work of snapping their restraints, and I block out the shooting on the other side of the door. This is the trust in the club Grumps always went on about when we were kids. I know they’re out there making their way closer to the house, if not inside by now.

I meet Aspen’s eye and take in the split lip and bruised cheekbone.

“You good, babe?”

She nods and then tells me, “He’s not, though.”

Looking at my brother, I take his injuries more seriously. His eyes are drooping more than they should after suffering a beating. He’s pale as fuck, and sweat pebbles his forehead.

“Talk to me, Myles. What can’t I see?”

“Pretty sure I’ve got internal bleeding. I can’t move.”

Aspen gasps. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

A small smile appears on my brother’s face. “Didn’t want you to worry.”

“Mason!”

Leo’s voice is far off. Too far to even be sure it was him. I lift Myles’s hoodie and tee. The bruising spreads from his ribs around to his back. He’s not supposed to die. I’m here now.

“Mase!”

It takes a hot minute to realise the shooting has stopped. Seconds later, the door opens, and Leo, JJ, and Cas darken the room.

“Babe, go with Jay.”

I hear chatter, but all I can hear clearly is Myles's breathing starting to change.

“I’m not leaving without you. We’ll all go.”

I turn to the one woman I’ve ever loved more than I’ve ever loved myself. Regret swims through me, and I reach out and cup her cheek as she kneels at my side.

“I love you more than you could ever comprehend. I’m sorry for the shit that went down before today. But I need you to leave now.” Over my shoulder, I tell Jay, “Get her out of here, and don’t let her back.”
