“He was strong?”

She drew a breath, quietly letting it out. “Yes. He was.”

“And you had nightmares?”

“Yes. I still do. That’s how Czar knew what to do when you had one tonight.”

“I hate them both,” Elijah whispered fiercely. “Rick and Corey.”

“I know. I thought time would fix my nightmares, but I’m still scared sometimes, especially at night.”

“So you got Czar,” Elijah said, his voice a little muffled because his face was pressed into the dog’s fur.

“I did. He was just a puppy when I first got him but he grew fast. I hired a trainer who helped me teach him to protect. And then I finally started sleeping better.”

“Because he was guarding you.”

“That and... I felt different. More like my old self.”

“Powerful,” Elijah mumbled.

“You’re very smart,” she said with unmistakable affection.

He yawned noisily. “He makes me feel powerful, too. Do you think my dad will let me have a dog of my own? When you have to leave?”

Kaj’s chest constricted and Val’s hand briefly stilled on Elijah’s back. “I think you should ask him,” she said. “Your father loves you and he wants you to feel safe and powerful. And if he’s agreeable, I’ll help you pick out a dog who’ll suit.”

“Will you help me train him?” He yawned again. “I’ve been watching videos, but I’m not sure that’s enough.” His voice slurred a little. He sounded so much younger like this. Normally Elijah sounded like a mini adult. Kaj missed his little boy sometimes.

“I’d be proud to.” She pressed a kiss to Elijah’s blond head. “Why don’t we discuss it tomorrow, when we’re both more awake?”

“M’kay. G’night, Val.” He snuggled closer to the dog. “I’m glad you’re here.”

“Me too, honey. Call for me if you need me. Sleep now.”

Kaj backed up so that she could leave Elijah’s room. She closed the door behind herself, leaning against it wearily. “He’s okay,” she said. “He had another nightmare, so I sang to him.”

It sounded like she was apologizing. He stepped closer, cupping her cheek in the palm of his hand. “I’m glad you did.” His heart did a slow roll when she leaned into his touch, just as she had in the garage earlier. “I heard the tail end of it. You’re good with him. Thank you.”

She smiled self-deprecatingly. “I’m already way too attached to him.”

Kaj rested his forehead against hers. “What about his dad?”

“Way too attached to him, too.”

His heart began to pound as he brushed his lips over hers. “I’m glad. It would have been awful for this to be one-sided on my part.”

“Not one-sided.” She glanced at the stairs. “But not here. There are people downstairs.”

He grabbed her hand and pulled her into the guest room. He didn’t have to pull hard because she was right behind him. Breathless, he closed the door and pushed her up against it and his mouth was on hers before either of them could say another word.

It was instant heat, instant want. Instant need.

Her lips were soft under his and he tried to be gentle, but she wasn’t having it. Her arms linked around his neck and she pulled him closer, parting her lips when he traced them with the tip of his tongue. He grabbed a handful of her hair in one hand at the middle of her back and clutched her hip with the other. He was so damn hard that it almost hurt.

Needing friction, he rocked up into her, pressing his cock into her softness. They fit and he couldn’t help but fantasize how she’d feel beneath him. She moved fluidly with him, giving him a taste of what it would be like.

Heaven. It would be heaven. He was already so close, even with layers of clothing still separating them.
