“No,” Juliette admitted. “I… I think I liked it.”

“You think?”

“I mean, I’m obviously confused. I really like you as a person, and I was letting my feelings of warmth toward you get mixed up in my body.”

“I don’t think that’s how it works…”

“Of course that’s how it works. What else would explain my… reaction?”

“I hate to point out the obvious, but maybe you’re not as straight as you thought.”

“I’ve always dated guys. I’ve never been into women before.”

“That doesn’t make you straight.”

“You’re right. That in itself is not a defining factor. I need to sort this out once and for all. I need to prove that I really am straight.”

“How in the world would you prove something like that?”

“Well, it is a big ask, and I absolutely imagine you will say no. I want to… experiment with you. See through my feelings for you. Soon enough, I’ll realize that I only care about you like a friend, and I only admire your body because you’re so beautiful – the same way any straight woman would admire a beautiful woman.”

“What if you just end up proving the opposite?”

“I won’t. I. Am. Straight. I can’t imagine things would get very far between us.” Juliette said through gritted teeth. “Look, Liv, I understand completely if this isn’t for you. I’ve messed you around already. This would be messing you around more. It is super messy anyway because we are step-sisters. But, I know I need to find some kind of way to trial this. I’m sure I can find someone else. That’s what dating apps are for. I can –”

“Absolutely not.” Liv’s face that had looked curious and confused was suddenly resolute. “I am not entrusting you to some stranger to go on this journey with. Of course, I’ll help you.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, I will. You may turn out not to be into women, but I’m sure it’s not escaped your notice that I am super into you. I’d love to date you, even if it’s only for a short time.”

“Date?” Juliette squeaked. “I was thinking of just… physical experimentation.. like um.. kissing.”

“We should do both. I mean, if you want to be thorough. You know that romantic and sexual attraction aren’t the same. It could be you’re into women physically but not romantically, or vice versa. You want to prove that you’re straight on all fronts, right?”

“Right.” Juliette hadn’t thought of that, but the idea of dating Liv was enticing – all in the name of proving her straightness, of course. “In that case, where do we start?”

“Right here. This is our first official lunch date. Come here, let’s sit on the couch.”

They moved to the couch, taking their food with them. Liv dug into her burger. It was hilarious how much she loved those burgers. They weren’t even that good, but Liv went crazy for them. Juliette felt a fond smile gracing her face as she started in on her chicken wrap.

“So, what made you finally decide to talk to me? It must have been a scary conversation to initiate.”

“Yeah, but not knowing for sure is driving me crazy. I couldn’t take it anymore. How… how was it for you?”

“Discovering my sexuality, you mean? Pretty boring. I always knew I was into women, from the time I understood what it mean to be into anyone. When I was old enough to have the sex talk, my dad gave me the rundown on gay and straight sex. It’s all the same thing to him – all sex, all love. I never even officially came out. I just turned up at the house one day with a girl I liked and told him that we were going on a date.”

“How did he react?”

“He was ecstatic. I was a bit of a late bloomer. He was worried that I wouldn’t find someone. Of course, like most teenage relationships, it ended after not too long, but I’m still glad it happened. Joanne moved to Europe, but we still keep in contact. She has a wife, now, and she’s pregnant with their first child.”

Wow. It was incredible to Juliette that things were so easy for some people. For her, it wouldn’t be that easy.

But, she reminded herself, it wouldn’t come to that. Liv had agreed to help her prove to herself that she was straight. This was going to work.

The finished eating and put their takeaway packets aside. Juliette wondered if Liv would kiss her again, and found she was more excited than nervous about the prospect.

“Come here.”
