“Thanks. My assignment manager can be a bit of a bitch, and I have rent to pay.”

She heard a chuckle behind her.

They walked through a ballroom, a dining room, and down a hallway to the kitchen. A woman looked at them and raised her eyebrows.

“Sarah, this is Miss Haley Preller. She is going to be with us for a few days, overnight, and for all meals.”

“She’s wearing...” Sarah was staring at the headpiece.

“Yes. She is. Which explains the very gentle house arrest she is now under.” Lord Renith spoke softly.

Haley blurted, “They are bringing my cat. She’s large.”

Sarah smiled gently. “I like cats. She is arriving with food?”

“She is. I hope.”

Mr. Tangero said, “She will have everything she needs.”

Sarah said, “The general isn’t going to be joining you for dinner?”

Haley paled.

Lord Renith shook his head. “He is off this base. Permanently.”

Haley gasped. “He died?”

Mr. Tangero said, “He’s alive, but he will have to sign documents with his other hand.”

Haley slumped. “May I get a glass of water? It’s been a day.”

Sarah moved into action. “Of course. Do you need anything else?”

“No. I had lunch.”

Sarah got an apple and sliced it swiftly and then opened the fridge and got out some sliced cheddar. “Come with me, miss.”

The food was piled on a tray, and Sarah walked past the dining room and ballroom to a pretty study that overlooked the green hills and the looming forest.

The tray was put on a tiny table with a glass of water, and Sarah pointed at the chair. “Have a seat, love.”

“Oh. Thank you.” Haley sat and took the water for a large sip.

“What would you like for dinner?”

“Whatever is easiest.”

“Not a specific answer. What do you like?”

“Okay. Quiche, spaghetti, tacos, roast chicken, roast beef, and mashed potatoes.” She ticked it off on her fingers. “Oh, and I would love a cupcake.”

“Just one?”

“Yes. And a candle to blow out.”

Sarah paused. “How old are you today?”

“Thirty.”
