Lord Renith raised his brows. “It?”
“Her feline. That way, we don’t need to draw attention by having someone constantly coming and going.”
Lord Renith smiled. “That will be fine. I am sure she will rest better with her pet nearby.”
Mr. Tangero nodded and walked to the door where a guard was waiting. He relayed the order, and the man picked up a handset and relayed it to someone else. Her address was stated, and the cat, food, and accessories were requested as well as her clothing.
Haley looked at Lord Renith. “My cat is a little... odd. She’s also a little much.”
“I am sure it will be fine. Now, do any of the other items catch your fancy?”
“No. Clothes, my cat, and cat stuff will be fine.”
Mr. Tangero smiled. “I believe he meant the artifacts.”
She blushed. “Oh. They all appeal to me. Should I take the headpiece off?”
Lord Renith cocked his head. “Does it want to come off?”
She lifted her hands to her head, and the band didn’t come off. “Um, no. It is stuck.”
Lord Renith chuckled. “I thought it might be.”
Mr. Tangero was surprised. “You did?”
“Yes. They are obviously a set and will only be effective if used together. We know the artifacts appear at every single incursion. They have never been on more than one defender. It just has never been made clear that the defender would be female.”
Haley knew the answer, but she didn’t want to say it. She bit her lip. She was getting a lot of information, and everything was making sense, but it was embarrassing.
“Miss Preller, what is the issue?”
“Uh, the download is getting detailed as to the circumstances. I am still making sense of it.”
She did not want to tell them about the explanations in her mind. There was no way for her to tell them what she was learning. Shadowborn were forbidden from having relationships with those who did not share the affliction.
Haley fidgeted and said, “Now what?”
“Why don’t we head to the kitchen? I will get the housekeeper to make dinner and notify her that you will be staying.”
“For the next few weeks,” she muttered.
“Of course. Of course.” He nodded. “Will you accompany me?”
“Um, okay.”
She rubbed the bracelet, and the jewellery around her lit up bright. “Oops. Yeah, we should go.”
Mr. Tangero said, “Miss, I have a few questions about what you are experiencing. It hasn’t been recorded before.”
She nodded. “Of course. You can ask anything, and if I have an answer in here, I will tell you.”
Lord Renith headed up the stairs, and she followed behind with Mr. Tangero finishing their little parade.
They went to the main level. Lord Renith waited for her and smiled. “You look a little flustered.”
“You could say that. I thought I was just going to sneak into the lab and give the guys in lab coats the file and the bracelet. This is... more than sneaking.” She paused. “Oh, shoot. I have to get my phone and file my hours.”
Mr. Tangero said, “We will confirm your hours. No problem.”
