Screams, curses, shrieks, and whines came to her ears, and they echoed over and over.

She could hear Jarol near her, but waves of attackers pushed him away from her, and he fought his way back to stop the tide.

Madness was coming through the rift. Temporal magic and energy were pouring out of the scar in dimensional space.

Haley was fighting, pushing back, and crushing and slicing the attackers into pieces as the weak point slowly eased shut.

“Haley?”

Haley gasped and opened her eyes, the pounding of the water on her head was familiar, and it completed her grounding to reality.

Jarol came close and asked, “Haley?”

She swallowed and shut the water off. She took the towel that he held out to her and wrapped it around herself. “That was a very long day.”

He hugged her and kissed her temple. The artifacts had absorbed into her body for a while to heal all the damage that had been done.

He murmured, “And now we get centuries together. So, where do you want to go?”

“Everywhere.” She looked at him. “At least we know why it takes two.”

“Yes, that mystery has been solved.”

“You did good.”

He smiled, kissed her forehead, and then kissed her lips. “You are spectacular.”

“Present tense?”

He chuckled. “Your towel fell.”

She felt the slow creep of a blush, and his curious gaze indicated he was tracking it. She cleared her throat. “How long do rift couples live?”

“A few hundred years. If we keep travelling, it could be longer.”

She moved closer to him to obscure his view. “Why?”

“We don’t have to hide our lack of aging. We can find a nice quiet place somewhere in the world and just spend time studying history.”

“I can put all your books away and look for data points you were looking for.”

He held her tighter. “That is what I hoped you would say. Until death do us part.”

She looked into his eyes, and the artifacts showed her what her future would look like. She used his ring to feed him what she was seeing, and they stood there until she felt a draft and then a furry head on the back of her knees.

Her family was complete... for now. The future was full of light, love, laughter, and eventually, Monster might have kittens.
