He grinned. “You did?”

“Yup. Wanna go digging?”

“Absolutely.”

“Fine. I will spot it, and you bring the shovel.”

He chuckled. “Absolutely, but then shower. We are both in desperate need.”

She laughed, and they turned together to go hunting for enough funds to make them able to buy groceries and maybe another set of clothes. She had no idea if the energy that repaired the house had worked on her wardrobe. She doubted it.

He got a shovel, and they walked across the yard with their fingers entwined.

“You know, if this is your idea of courtship, I have to admit to being intrigued.” She leaned against him, and he chuckled.

“You are easy to please.”

She chuckled. “If you say so.”

She marked the spot in the woods. He dug out the chest, and she used energy from the gems that had absorbed into her body to heal the ground. No one would see the marks they left.

“Do you think the cameras will notice us returning with a chest of jewels?” Jarol asked idly.

“No. They didn’t notice us walking across the field, so... no.”

He grinned. “Life with you will not be boring, but I think we have enough here to travel the world.”

“Good. I think it is going to take a few years before I stop seeing those light elves coming to burn our world. They were so pretty; it was a shame to destroy them.”

“They hit like hammers and didn’t fake blows with those weapons. I am glad they are dead.”

“I am glad you are alive.” She squeezed his arm.

“I am delighted that you are alive.” He leaned over and kissed her as he dropped the shovel, and they entered the house.

After the kiss, they entered the kitchen. They could see Sarah now. She was full shadow elf. Sarah smiled and said, “Well, done. Ah, you can see me now.”

Haley nodded. “The moment the bracelet was on. I just didn’t want to be rude. I saw the illusion overlapped on you. I thought Jarol knew.”

Sarah laughed, and her crimson eyes flashed. “You are adorable.”

Jarol looked at the housekeeper with astonishment. “You always looked like that?”

Haley laughed. “You are adorable.” She stroked his cheek.

He grabbed her fingers and kissed her knuckles. “And you, my lady, need a shower.”

She grinned, and Monster shoved her into him.

Jarol smiled. “Well, my lady, it seems that destiny keeps pushing us together.”

“Destiny can wait until I have a shower.”

Sarah smiled. “Dinner will be waiting whenever you return. Take your time.”

Haley made a face as they headed past Sarah and toward the stairs. Every clever bit of banter at her disposal was going to be taken seriously as an invitation, and she wasn’t quite up to dealing with Jarol one-on-one. She liked having backup, and now it wasn’t just Monster.

Pale skin, golden eyes, claws, and a desperately insane twist to their faces as the light elves struggled through the rift that she was squeezing closed. The blades slashed at her, and she felt every hit to her armour.
